25 Remote Teaching Tips To Engage Students In Distance Learning -

As remote teaching and learning become more common–if not the standard in many places over the next six months–I thought it might be useful to offer some remote teaching tips to engage students in distance learning.

As with all content, how useful and relevant any of these are depends on your context–experience, grade level, need, priorities and strengths as a teacher, etc. Some are possibly too general to help (e.g., ‘Simplify’), but hopefully out of the 25 remote teaching tips below, one or two might stick and make your planning a little easier–and more engaging for students.

Three Active Learning Strategies You Can Do in 10 Minutes or Less

Three Active Learning Strategies You Can Do in 10 Minutes or Less | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
A 2015 survey of Faculty Focus readers found that the number one barrier preventing faculty from implementing the flipped classroom model and other active learning experiences into their courses is TIME. Faculty reported they don’t have time to plan extra learner-centered activities, due to increasing responsibilities, and they don’t have time to implement the activities in class because there’s too much content to cover.

How Do You Learn to Teach Online? Here are 9 Tips! | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Tips to help online educators plan their first course. With online education, a growing force on the market, more enterprising individuals than ever before are finding themselves inspired to launch an online course of their own. However, for many of these potential educators, the first hurdle is learning how to teach a course."

When people ask me how to get started in online education, I recommend that they begin by taking small steps. Begin by creating a course shell and transferring some of your course content to it. Then, transfer assessments and activities to the course. While still teaching face-to-face, have students begin doing some assignments through the LMS. Slowly, begin to transition from fully face-to-face, to blended, to fully online.

Practutor Blog10 Things I Wish I Knew as a New Teacher - Practutor Blog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Long ago, when I started out as an ELA teacher, I wasn't aware of the challenges that I were to face as a new teacher. New at school, I started with high hopes in my mind; and quickly filled up my book-of-incidents.

As I reflect over years, I wish I had known a few things, which, unfortunately, caused me a lot of hardship, and had to learn through experiences. I have bags filled with them.

Here I list a few of my tips and experiences, again with high hopes that I could be resourceful to new teachers.

27 ways to become a better 21st century teacher. Many interesting aspects, and I believe many teachers already follow many of these. However, some reminders are always useful and inspirational! I particularly like the suggestion to participate in conference calls around the world with your class. Or perhaps follow a MOOC, either with you students or to develop your own teaching further?

Responding to Microaggressions in the Classroom: Taking ACTION

Responding to Microaggressions in the Classroom: Taking ACTION | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The term “microaggression” was coined in 1970 to name relatively slight, subtle, and often unintentional offenses that cause harm (Pierce, 1970). Since then, a substantial body of research on microaggressions has demonstrated their prevalence and harmful effects (Boysen, 2012; Solorzan, et. al., 2010; Suárez-Orozco, et. al., 2015; Sue, 2010).

Whether an observer, the target, or the unintentional perpetrator of microaggressions, faculty often don’t know how to respond to them in the moment. We may feel frozen (if the observer) or defensive (if the target or perpetrator). How we respond can shift the communication climate from supportive to defensive, which can have an adverse effect on student learning and comfort (Dallimore, et al, 2005; Souza, et al, 2010). Despite the feelings of paralysis or reactivity that tend to emerge in response to microaggressions in the classroom, certain practices can be implemented to increase the likelihood of maintaining a supportive climate.

How To Work Smarter--Not Harder--As A Teacher - | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Teaching is hard.

And because it’s so important, we push ourselves–and are pushed by others–to be as close as we can be to perfect.

In public education, defined in terms and standards that it defines and measures itself by, perfect teaching means bringing every child to master every academic standard, then to be able to prove that mastery on a government-designed test.

10 Tips to Make Learning REAL

10 Tips to Make Learning REAL | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Another Christmas has passed and I am continually amazed by the technologies that kids now have access to.  For example, my son received a drone from my mother-in-law and has been playing with it non-stop for days now. At first, he was focused on just the basics of flying the device. After having mastered take off, landing, and balance, his focus now is on using the camera to take photos and video.

At my university, I teach students in an interpersonal communications course. These students are first term college students, a few fresh out of high school. As is my common practice, I end my week of instruction with reflective questions for the students:
What was your significant learning this past week?
What principles for everyday life can you extract from our class activities? (Note: The activities are experiential).
What did you learn or what was reinforced about yourself?
What can you take from the class activities to use in your life outside of class?
