Communication, training and strategic thinking can help institutions support this growing portion of the student population.

David Hutchins is vice president of higher education and K–12 education for CDW•G, a leading technology provider to government and education.

As technology brings sweeping changes to business, healthcare, government and other fields, a similarly dramatic shift is happening in the workforce.

Many workers never envisioned a day they’d need to go back to college to stay employable. They now find themselves pursuing different degrees, certifications, boot camps and other programs to augment existing skills or jump-start an entirely new career.

NMC Releases Digital Literacy Impact Study

NMC Releases Digital Literacy Impact Study | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The NMC has released the 2017 Digital Literacy Impact Study: An NMC Horizon Project Strategic Brief to uncover the learner’s perspective of how digital literacy training influences work life after graduation. As a complement to the definitions and frameworks outlined in the NMC’s 2017 strategic brief on digital literacy in higher education, this new study examines digital literacy in action as learners enter the workforce. More than 700 recent graduates from 36 institutions responded to an NMC survey that addressed the experiences they gained at colleges and universities, and how their proficiencies or lack thereof have affected their careers. Funding for this independent research endeavor and publication was provided by Adobe. Below are some key findings from the publication.

The library of the future? It's digital

The library of the future? It's digital | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The National Student Survey and the teaching excellence framework are placing growing emphasis on the learning environment and student experience. But discussions have moved on from thinking about physical spaces. Instead, libraries are putting digital innovation at the top of their lists.

Any revamped digital approach to libraries needs to begin by considering how student expectations vary. While hard copies of core texts will likely have a place on the library shelves for years to come, the way students consume and digest information is changing.

Students' Self-Fulfilling Prophecies: Five Ways to Break the Cycle

Students' Self-Fulfilling Prophecies: Five Ways to Break the Cycle | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Faculty are often confronted by the ghosts of educators past. In the writing intensive courses I teach, those ghosts usually manifest in one phrase: “I’m a bad writer.” This embarrassed confession bespeaks an educational experience fraught with negative beliefs and expectations, not just about their writing but about their ability to succeed in general. The phrase becomes an inescapable prophecy lurking in every writing assignment prompt. “I know I’m not going to do well on this assignment,” they explain to themselves, “I’m just not a good writer.” They do not seek help, ask questions, organize their notes, or create outlines and rough drafts of their essays because the outcome is a foregone conclusion. And of course, because they do not do these vital steps in the writing process, they receive poor grades—and the prophecy is fulfilled.

Not exactly earth-shattering for those of us who have taught online. We need to do a better job preparing students for online learning.

Framing 'failure' as a necessary educational experience

Framing 'failure' as a necessary educational experience | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Though failure is often described solely as a means to determine a path towards success, educators and panelists at a recent two-day event at Teachers College, Columbia University stressed the importance of incorporating failure into learning and the ways to use it productively, in higher ed courses, K-12 classrooms and teacher preparation programs."

Sometimes we learn more through trial and error than from getting it right the first time. I think we need to provide more opportunities to allow students to experiment without penalty for failure.

Digital student – what have we learned? | Jisc Digital Student | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As part of the online learners’ study I was asked to write a short review of what the previous studies have taught us. Of course there is no substitute for engaging with that work, especially as each team took a different focus. The original HE study considered learners’ transactional and transformational engagements with technology, and how their expectations about learning with technology were set by their lecturers and the demands of their course. The FE study looked more closely at how learners differ among themselves, whether they are ‘mainstream pragmatists’, digital pioneers, or have various kinds of digital disadvantage. The Skills study looked particularly at the interface between learning and work.

A New Pedagogy is Emerging... and Online Learning is a Key Contributing Factor | teachonline.ca

A New Pedagogy is Emerging... and Online Learning is a Key Contributing Factor | teachonline.ca | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

In all the discussion about learning management systems, open educational resources (OERs(link is external)), massive open online courses (MOOCs(link is external)), and the benefits and challenges of online learning, perhaps the most important issues concern how technology is changing the way we teach and - more importantly - the way students learn. For want of a better term, we call this “pedagogy.”

What is clear is that major changes in the way we teach post-secondary students are being triggered by online learning and the new technologies that increase flexibility in, and access to, post-secondary education.
