How to Tell a Story
I recently read Donald Miller’s eBook, “How to Tell a Story”. It was a quick read, but one that caught me a bit off guard. Sometimes we take stories for granted or think that they are “just for kids”; but as adults, we shape our lives through stories. Each day has a beginning, middle, and end. Each life situation, each job, and each year is shaped in much the same way.

10 Visual Storytelling Rules Every Digital Marketer--and Student-- Needs to Know

10 Visual Storytelling Rules Every Digital Marketer--and Student-- Needs to Know | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Samantha Lile writes: "Long ago, storytellers were wise old men and women who conveyed tales of the ancients and lessons learned through the ages. Later, stories were told by authors, playwrights and directors. But thanks to technology, anyone can now become a storyteller, a reporter and a publisher.

Visual storytelling, in particular, has emerged as an important trend in web and graphic design, as well as other forms of marketing in the digital era – and for good reason. The visual cortex is the largest section of the human brain. According to a 2008 study, the average person remembers about 10 percent of what they hear when tested 72 hours later. But when visuals are added into the mix, the figure increases to 65 percent."

I found this via Lee Watanabe Crockett's post, but wanted to share Samantha Lile's full version. Lately I've been focused on students as consumers of digital information. It's important to remember they will be--indeed, they already are--creators of digital information, too!

We'll be doing a digital storytelling project later this year, so I'll be sharing these tips with our student authors.

When you are curating content without a story you are not sharing your knowledge. You are sharing content. All curators do make a selection and share that. But what I miss is the story, the context. Why are they sharing this content and what is the context? What is there to learn and why?

Storytelling has been around as long as humankind. It is one of the most effective ways to communicate an important truth to another person. It is a connection point between two people. It gives meaning, context, and understanding in a world that is often filled with chaos and disorder.

The Psychology of eLearning: What Makes eLearning Memorable?

The Psychology of eLearning: What Makes eLearning Memorable? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The first post in our psychology series discussed the psychology of storytelling. Storytelling is an extremely useful tool for learning and memory and is one of the many different techniques used in elearning. Stories, pictures, experiences; these are the things we remember. You can sit in a formal training environment all day long, and chances are you will still only retain a fraction of the information presented to you. It isn’t because you aren’t paying attention; traditional training often simply fails to be memorable. In the end it comes down to the psychology of learning or, in this case, the psychology of elearning. Every day employers are struggling to figure out how to improve knowledge retention, which requires getting information into long-term memory and keeping it there.
