How can we assure quality in online higher education?

How can we assure quality in online higher education? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This blog was kindly contributed by Dr David LeFevre, Director of the EdTech Lab at Imperial College and the founder of higher education platform company Insendi, part of Study Group.

Last month a subtle warning shot was shot across the bows of universities still struggling to manage the disruption caused by Covid-19. When the Minister responsible for higher education announced that UK students would be charged full tuition fees for online study, she added a caveat – the assumption of quality. If students ‘feel that the quality isn’t there’ she said, ‘there are processes that they can follow’ to seek redress’.

How Students Critiquing One Another’s Work Raises The Quality Bar

How Students Critiquing One Another’s Work Raises The Quality Bar | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Too often, when students produce school work, they turn it into a teacher for a grade and move on. And after the teacher spends time evaluating the student’s work, many students never look at the feedback, a cycle that frustrates both parties and isn’t the most effective way to learn.

Additionally, Gladwell failed to adequately distinguish between the quantity of hours spent practicing, and the quality of that practice. This misses a huge portion of Ericsson’s findings, and is the reason why Tim Ferriss scoffs at Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule in this video.

Five ideas to improve teacher quality - The Hechinger Report

Five ideas to improve teacher quality - The Hechinger Report | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Low-performing schools struggle to attract and retain good teachers. This June, in an effort to give more students access to excellent teachers, the United States Department of Education required states to submit “educator equity plans,” meant to identify the root causes of why poor and minority kids receive more inexperienced teachers and fix the problem. Earlier this month, plans from 16 states were approved and while these plans vary in specifics, many of the states focused on reforming teacher preparation as the key first step to improve quality.

Session 34 – How can pupils give each other quality feedback and enhance their learning? | UKEdChat.com | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Session Title:

How can pupils give each other quality feedback and enhance their learning?

Session Summary:

Once again, hosting #ukedchat was an evening of mind-frying! In the nicest possible way, of course, but so many different ideas were floating about from what seemed to be a simple question! We started off talking about pupil feedback that is given via face to face, real life, real time methods – 2 stars and a wish, Tickled Pink, Green for Growth, “Even Better If….”, Elmos, OSC (one small change),  traffic light cards + pairing up red/green pupils! The use of post-it notes is still going strong – whether by teachers or students/pupils…. Opportunities to check each others’ work for  neatness, spelling, etc are seen as important… and links between 360 feedback in the business world were mentioned. Plan, develop, reflect/revisit, revise, rework/learning caterpillars/heart of the matter are other phrases used

What Would Socrates Think About MOOCs? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
We all have, consciously or otherwise, a vision of perfect education: two people, a master and student, sitting together, talking. The classic Aristotelian tutorial model.
