Online education is a boon to lifelong learners who wish to acquire knowledge even after their schooling or graduation. It’s a fastest growing form of the education today. The flexibility, lower cost, a variety of choices, etc., are the key features of online education.

But there are still arguments going on, whether or not online education is advantageous over traditional face-to-face institutions. There is no unique answer for this argument and it varies depending on the perspective of a student’ situation.  There is an interesting infographic, published by Visual.ly, that clearly explains the pros and cons of online learning.

21st century skills is a term that’s been bandied about for over a decade now.

Loosely, it refers to the creative and technology-based skills students are increasingly required to demonstrate to use information in the real world.

While there’s plenty of tools, leadership, strategies, and even rhetoric surrounding this discussion, what’s there’s less of is data.

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 13, 2013 -- /PRNewswire/ -- Online higher education is surging in popularity. According to the 2012 Survey of Online Learning conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group, the number of students taking at least one online course has surpassed 6.7 million, an increase of 570,000 students over the previous year. Thirty-two percent of higher education students now take at least one course online.

Educators will often discuss the barriers to online education without considering what a student would need to do to overcome those barriers. The typical answer to "are you ready for online education?" is "online education isn't for everyone." As someone who has taught English at all levels, face-to-face and online, I could not disagree with this more.
