Having students present the arguments in a law case gives them a context for developing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.

The courtroom is breathless as the state’s attorney rises to present her opening statement in the case of Chris Archer v. New Columbia. Jury members sit at attention, listening to the argument that the defendant, Chris Archer, should be tried for first-degree murder and criminal hazing in the death of fraternity pledge Milan Jackson.

“To be truly empowering, new technologies must stand on two pillars,” said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova as she opened the International Conference on International Literacy Day at Paris Headquarters, which focuses this year on Literacy in a digital world. “First, they must be inclusive, bridging gaps, not deepening them. Second, they must be underpinned by respect for human rights and dignity. All this gives rise to new questions about the meaning of literacy today.”

Terri Hubbard's curator insight, March 29, 2021 3:31 PM
This article was a quick read that introduced scaffolding strategies to improve literacy skills. Some of the strategies I have implemented and can attest to their value. Others are new to me and provide some ideas that I can try in the near future. I have heard of both Boom cards and Flipgrid but have not actually investigated them to implement. This will become a small goal for the near future.

Teaching Information Literacy: Tips and Resources | Tech Learning

Teaching Information Literacy: Tips and Resources | Tech Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The Final Report of the American Library Association Presidential Committee on Information Literacy states, "Information literate people know how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively to solve a particular problem or make a decision — whether the information they select comes from a computer, a book, a government agency, a film, or any number of other possible resources."
This seems easy enough to teach on the surface, but when you take into consideration what students do with the information they gather, many factors enter into the learning equation. Instead of wading through hundreds of potential hits, students need to learn:
how to focus their searching strategies and zero in on the information;
- how to recognize reliable resources and those that are not reliable;
- what plagiarism is and how to avoid doing it;
- how to paraphrase a selection;
- how to give credit to their resources.
This article will provide several resources for further study and also several ideas and resources that will help you in developing your teaching strategies for your students.
