Interactive Strategies for Engaging Large and Small Classes Alike

Interactive Strategies for Engaging Large and Small Classes Alike | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

As the associate director at Tulane’s Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching (CELT), I work with faculty to help them transform their classrooms into more engaged spaces. One way to do that is by creating opportunities for interaction between the professor and the students and between the students themselves. I always start the conversation on this topic with three questions:

  1. What is the purpose of making a class interactive?
  2. What does an interactive class look like?
  3. What gets in the way of you creating a more interactive space in your classroom?

Learning Apps - Create interactive and multimedia learning blocks

Learning Apps - Create interactive and multimedia learning blocks | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

LearningApps.org is a Web 2.0 application, to support learning and teaching processes with small interactive modules. Those modules can be used directly in learning materials, but also for self studying. The aim is to collect reusable building blocks and make them available to everyone. Blocks (called Apps) include no specific framework or a specific learning scenario. The blocks are therefore not suitable as complete lessons or tasks, instead they must be embedded in an appropriate teaching scenario.

Why do so many Moodle courses suck?

Why do so many Moodle courses suck? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Moodle is a magnificent free product and has the potential to enable schools and teachers to build wonderfully unique interactive online learning courses in which learner interaction can be tracked, measured and responded to. Despite this the vast majority of Moodle courses I see are a long list of Word and PDF documents with at best a few forums that enable a minimum of human social interaction.

Ruby Rennie Panter's curator insight, August 1, 2014 5:16 AM

Nik gives some very useful insights and some practical ideas for developing online materials. He has a focus on Moodle, but the ideas relate to any online learning platform.

Donna Farren's curator insight, August 1, 2014 8:16 AM

Nik makes some great points about Moodle - or really putting any content online - there has to be instructional design training, online teaching training or blended teaching training and how to select content for online delivery.  technical training alone is not enough.

Mikko Hakala's curator insight, August 7, 2014 5:40 PM

Problems and possibilities of Moodle (and other similar platforms) outlined by Nik Peachey:

* Why Moodle courses often suck?

Not so intuitive platform to work with, lack of teacher training and skills to create online learning material (I agree with these points), excess security issues.

* What to do to improve.

* Comment about ready-made courses.

There are various problems, for example these often contain little student-teacher or peer interaction. I agree that the ready-made digital material, in my experience, is not very personalisable (and therefore difficult to teach in an inspired way).

* How to develop your Moodle skills?

The post gives 9 links to practical video tutorials (how to create a quiz, add a youtube, etc.). There are also free Moodle platforms to practice.

Great Interactive Tutorials to Raise Search Savvy Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Search literacy is an important element of the 21st century learning. The web is teeming with all kinds of information and part of this information  is nothing but junk. To let our students and kids surf this ocean of information without equipping them with the necessary gear is analogous to canoeing through turbulent waves, chances of staying afloat are next to impossible.

Is there an app for that? A review of mobile apps for information literacy classes

When we look around our libraries, students are routinely using their phones, tablets, and laptops as the basic tools for their research, and they seem to be online more often than not. When we talk about meeting students “where they are,” we are typically referring to teaching to a student’s skill-level. We propose expanding that to meeting them where they reside in the
digital landscape, and, increasingly, that involves an app-based environment on a personal device.

Escape Room Activities in the Library – Canadian School Libraries Journal

Escape Room Activities in the Library – Canadian School Libraries Journal | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Imagine waking up one day in total darkness, unsure of where you are and unable to remember anything about yourself except your first name. You discover you are trapped in the middle of a maze called the Glade with several other people. Your mission is to find your way out while avoiding the Grievers – your life depends on it.

Or perhaps ….Danger lies before you, while safety lies behind, Two of us will help you, whichever you would find, One among us seven will let you move ahead, Another will transport the drinker back instead, Two among our number hold only nettle wine, Three of us are killers waiting hidden in line.

Both of these are opening scenarios for escape room activities in the library. Creating engaging interactive problem solving activities is an engaging way to connect with your students. Recently Julian Taylor and myself presented Breakouts and Beyond at the OLA Super Conference where we provided a quick overview of what a Breakout or escape room is and some advice on how to implement this type of activity in the library.
