How Students Benefit From a Flipped Classroom (And Ways To Implement It)

How Students Benefit From a Flipped Classroom (And Ways To Implement It) | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The internet has created hundreds of hubs for teachers to share ideas and insights when it comes to helping students learn. In addition to lesson plans, educators offer tips and advice for connecting with kids.

One method of teaching that has become popular is the flipped or inverted classroom in which students do homework during class and then watch videos with the course material at home. The concept is so much more involved, especially for teachers who want to teach it well. Here is why you should consider flipped learning in your classroom.

Flipped Classroom 101: Challenges, Benefits & Design Tips | | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The flipped classroom model shifts the transfer of information online and moves practice and application into the classroom. Classically, the transfer of information has occurred in class via lecture and practice has been assigned for homework. The value of this inversion is that students can pace their progress through a video (pausing, rewinding, rewatching). They also have the benefit of a supportive peer group and the subject-area expert as they attempt to apply new information.

4 Tools for a Flipped Classroom

4 Tools for a Flipped Classroom | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Whether students do the advance work at home or in class, these tools help teachers track their work and assess their understanding.

Flipped classroom, flipped learning—you’ve probably heard these phrases in recent years, and you may be wondering how this strategy works.

Flipped lessons replace teacher lectures with instructional material—often a video—that students watch and interact with at home. They apply what they learned in class the next day through a variety of activities or assignments that could once have been homework, with the teacher working as a coach or guide.

To foster an optimal learning environment for students, consider implementing flipped classrooms with the aid of versatile resources like Google Classroom, Edpuzzle, Padlet, and Quizizz. These platforms enable educators to share instructional content online, allowing students to engage with material at their own pace. Google Classroom serves as a centralized hub for communication and resource distribution, while Edpuzzle facilitates interactive video lessons. Padlet encourages collaborative discussions and content sharing, and Quizizz adds an element of gamification to assessments. By integrating these tools, educators can create a dynamic and student-centric learning experience that enhances comprehension and engagement.

Three Active Learning Strategies You Can Do in 10 Minutes or Less

Three Active Learning Strategies You Can Do in 10 Minutes or Less | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
A 2015 survey of Faculty Focus readers found that the number one barrier preventing faculty from implementing the flipped classroom model and other active learning experiences into their courses is TIME. Faculty reported they don’t have time to plan extra learner-centered activities, due to increasing responsibilities, and they don’t have time to implement the activities in class because there’s too much content to cover.

8 Best Practices for Collaborating on Flipped Library Sessions | Faculty Focus

8 Best Practices for Collaborating on Flipped Library Sessions | Faculty Focus | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

A common practice at many colleges and universities involves course faculty inviting librarians into their classrooms to teach research and information literacy skills and concepts customized to disciplinary or course needs. Library instruction varies in format but often manifests in the librarian teaching a single, isolated class session—what librarians refer to as a “one-shot.” Many challenges accompany this traditional format, including time-constraints, disengaged audiences, and little understanding on the part of the student as to how the library instruction integrates with course content.

In the past few years at all levels of education, the flipped classroom model has emerged as one of the most promising educational approaches of the last century.

Educational researchers have argued that students are not merely vessels to be filled with knowledge, or exam factory funding units hell bent on 3 A*s. Yet many teachers and school leaders are still using older ‘chalk and talk’ teaching methods, despite much evidence of its lack of efficacy in the world we occupy today.

Flipping Large Classes: Three Strategies to Engage Students

Flipping Large Classes: Three Strategies to Engage Students | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

As we continue our ongoing series focused on the flipped classroom in higher education, it’s time to tackle another frequently asked question: “How can I flip a large class?”

I like this question because it’s not asking whether you can flip a large class, but rather what’s the best way to do it. Faculty who teach large classes are challenged not only by the sheer number of students but also by the physical space in the classroom. Having 100, 200, or 400+ students in class means teaching in large lecture halls with stadium seating and seats that are bolted to the floor. It’s not exactly the ideal space for collaboration and group discussions, so the types of flipped and active learning strategies you can use are more limited.
