A blend of online and face-to-face teaching is changing the nature of the classroom.
Jeremy Cooke's curator insight, February 24, 2015 7:23 AM

Blended education gets my vote - in the same sort of way that variable speed limits do - personalised choice driven by emerging communication media - relevant to a connected future whilst keeping people skills personal.

TRUCE's curator insight, March 2, 2015 3:53 PM

Sound approach in my opinion.

Raj Shekhar Mishra's curator insight, March 17, 2015 2:15 AM

The future of our classrooms is bright if we can carefully blend innovation with sound principles of education, rather than let one replace the other.

Executive Summary:

The key opportunity for institutions is to take the concepts developed by the MOOC experiment to date and use them to improve the quality of their face-to-face and online provision, and to open up access to higher education. Most importantly, the understanding gained should be used to inform diversification strategies including the development of new business models and pedagogic approaches that take full advantage of digital technologies.

For many things in life we learn by doing, yet this is often missing in online and offline learning. Some even think is it not possible. It is of course possible, in many ways. The entire flight simulation market had been around for decades and clearly delivers high-end performance skills. Soft skills can be taught, and many other domains, even abstract knowledge, benefit from placing the learner in a real context and asking them to DO something, make decisions, choose a tool, ask a question, apply a formula. Learning through scenarios is a well-developed technique.

From face-to-face teaching to online teaching: pedagogical transitions - USQ ePrints

From face-to-face teaching to online teaching: pedagogical transitions - USQ ePrints | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This paper will share the experiences of two instructors as they moved from teaching in a face-to-face environment to blended teaching and then to online teaching. It will describe the four year journey and shed light on the issues, perspectives and practices as the instructors reflected on the changes to their pedagogical practice and the resulting online student engagement. Data included three 1-hour interviews and an analysis of online discussion postings. The instructors reflected on their values, beliefs and assumptions about teaching and learning. As higher education has embraced online education as a way to reduce costs, increase flexibility, and enhance access to students it is important to gain an understanding of the perceptions of instructors moving into online teaching. This study found a change in the beliefs and teaching presence of the instructors from their initial resistance to online teaching to an approach which is mindful of the student experience and promotes a dialogical approach to online learning.

Will Online Learning Replace the Classroom?

Will Online Learning Replace the Classroom? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

In a time when most American toddlers are as comfortable with a touchscreen as with a crayon, one would be remiss to think that the current classroom-based model of education will survive as is. Change is most evident in higher education, where massive open online courses (MOOCs) account for a growing share of academic content, but exactly how much disruption can we expect from online learning?

Web-based education technology has seen both promising and lackluster results in terms of adoption and course completion rates; however, online education proponents assure us that the traditional classroom is on the cusp of a dramatic change.

Research Article: “Why Some Students Continue to Value Individual, Face-to-Face Research Consultations in a Technology-Rich World” | LJ INFOdocket | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

For decades, academic librarians have provided individual research consultations for students. There is little information, however, about why students schedule consultations, the kinds of assistance students feel are provided by librarians during consultations, and what students find valuable about face-to-face consultations, even with the availability of online research help. This exploratory, qualitative study of individual research consultations at the University of Vermont gathered students’ views on these questions. The findings will help librarians better understand how individual consultations serve students and what role consultations should play in the mix of reference services offered.

Do Teaching Online & Face-to-Face Classes Require Different Skills? | Wiziq.com

Do Teaching Online & Face-to-Face Classes Require Different Skills? | Wiziq.com | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

What skills do teachers need to teach online? Does professional development at your college look like this? Notice the teacher presenting is on the screen teaching at a distance while a technical person sits at the front of the class.

Many of  teachers think they can teach online and face-to-face classes the same way. According to a study conducted by Park, Johnson, Vath, Kubitskey, & Fishman (2013) on Examining the Roles of the Facilitator in Online and Face-to-Face Professional Development Contexts (Journal of Technology and Teacher Education, 21(2), 225-245), teachers need to cater to individual learners more online than face-to-face. In the face-to-face environments, students learn from each other and from the teacher. In the face-to-face class, the teacher is able to summarize the information for the students and get feedback from the students body language on how well they understood the information. In the online class, the teacher only knows whether the students understood or not from their writing. Teaching online requires that the teacher be very attentive and aware of the student’s individual interests, needs, and level of understanding.
