Teaching Adult Students with Considerable Professional Expertise

Teaching Adult Students with Considerable Professional Expertise | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Trends toward increased enrollment of non-traditional students are expected to continue (Stringer, 2015). Discussions about nontraditional college students often highlight some of the challenges our adult students face, such as balancing work, family, and school commitments, overcoming previous academic patterns that no longer serve them, and adapting to new approaches to learning (such as online classes.) The flip side, though, is that many non-traditional students bring a wealth of personal and professional experience to their pursuit of a new degree, which serves to the benefit their academic cohort (Stringer, 2015).

Teaching Strategies to Help Students Retain Information

Teaching Strategies to Help Students Retain Information | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As teachers, we are always looking for fresh teaching strategies that allow our students to retain and process the information that we teach them. Sometimes we tell our students to reread something in hopes that it will help them remember it better. Other times we encourage them to practice, practice, practice because we have all heard the saying “Practice makes perfect.” But we all know that in reality, some things just go in one ear and out the other. In fact, research has shown that if we don’t do anything with the new information that we learn within one hour of learning it, we will have forgotten about 50 percent of it.

James Alan Sturtevant calls student engagement the “whole ballgame”, and who would know this better than the 32-year veteran teacher, rapidly becoming known as the student engagement guru, and the author of the just-released Hacking Education: 50 Tips & Tools To Engage Teachers and Learners Daily?

While most teachers are racing for the door when they’ve been in education for 30 years, Sturtevant, whom Hack Learning nicknamed Jamstur (learn why in the podcast episode above), calls teaching a privilege and continues to raise the bar for all education stakeholders when it comes to engaging students and making teaching and learning fun.

I've always been a believer that every child can learn and every child can be engaged. Over my 11 year career, I've met many young learners who have challenged that belief, but this year, my philosophy has been rocked to its core. My administrators had been prepped on this young man, and he made his presence known from the first day of school.

The Open University’s Library Services (http://www.open.ac.uk/library/) has a specialist team of 7 librarians, the Live Engagement team, who design and deliver real-time online teaching using Adobe Connect. There is a programme of generic library and module-specific sessions. Whilst we reach a lot of students through these sessions, we like to try out new ways of engaging with students and hope to reach those who don’t attend formal library training.

We hear all the time about how we need to give students more choice. About how we should be helping them discover their passions, how we need more student-directed, inquiry-based learning in the classroom. But all of that can feel like a load of abstract, pie-in-the-sky hooey without practical instructions for how to actually do it. We need a structure, a format, a plan for delivering this kind of experience.

10 deep dive questions to ask about LEARNERS before you start | Donald Clark Plan B

10 deep dive questions to ask about LEARNERS before you start | Donald Clark Plan B | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The whole ‘Blended learning’ thing turned out to be an excuse for ‘Blended teaching’. It's largely used as an excuse for using teaching techniques you've used before with a couple of new things thrown in, whereas the promise had been delivery based on an analysis of learners and learning (the clue was in the second word – learning). To partly rectify this, here’s ten questions you may want to ask to inform your blend, questions about your learners. It’s easy to ignore learners when teaching but teaching, remember, is a means to an end, not an end in itself, and that end is learners and learning.
