Teachers who have high levels of self-efficacy, or those who believe in their own abilities, have the biggest impact on student learning, a new University of Melbourne review shows.

Researchers at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) said it was well known that teachers have a bigger impact on student learning than factors such as class size and facilities.

Teacher Characteristics and Behaviors that Make a Difference

Teacher Characteristics and Behaviors that Make a Difference | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Teaching and learning. For decades, we focused almost exclusively on the teaching side of things. More recently, we’ve been paying attention to learning, and that’s a good thing. However, we shouldn’t be thinking about one without the other—they’re both important and inseparably linked.

Nice list of links to get PD in over the summer. Had the expected conference lists but also included some I had not thought about. How and why to write an op-ed piece and writing a book were new to me. Also liked the link on how to get more out of webinars.

The two most important days in your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out why. - Mark Twain.

Discovering that above all other things, you want to be a teacher, is one thing.

Seeing that long and sometimes tortuous journey through to its conclusion is another.

Practicing Collaborative Digital Pedagogy to Foster Digital Literacies in Humanities Classrooms

Practicing Collaborative Digital Pedagogy to Foster Digital Literacies in Humanities Classrooms | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Key Takeaways
New digital tools and platforms create opportunities in pedagogy, but they also result in deployment of under-tested digital tools in classroom instruction, which raises questions and challenges for educators.
A collaborative project between a media studies professor and a digital humanities librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign sought to address these challenges by developing digital pedagogy practices.
As the two case studies described here show, these practices can foster an environment of interdisciplinary, collaborative student engagement with new tools; openly acknowledge the digital tools' experimental states; and encourage playful student tinkering with the tools, even when they appear simple or familiar.

This study of more than 3,100 teachers revisits key questions explored in the original Teachers Know Best report: how teachers use digital instructional tools in the classroom, as well as their attitudes towards technology and whether they believe existing digital tools are effective. As with the original report, research centered on consumer analytics and insight provides an opportunity to shift from anecdotes to a richer understanding of whether product developers are creating the digital tools that teachers want and need,

Digital Competence Framework for Educators (DigCompEdu)

The teaching professions face rapidly changing demands, which require a new, broader and more sophisticated set of competences than before. The ubiquity of digital devices and applications, in particular, requires educators to develop their digital competence.

The European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu) is a scientifically sound framework describing what it means for educators to be digitally competent. It provides a general reference frame to support the development of educator-specific digital competences in Europe. DigCompEdu is directed towards educators at all levels of education, from early childhood to higher and adult education, including general and vocational education and training, special needs education, and non-formal learning contexts.

"If you’ve ever found yourself reciting the phrase, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, you’ve likely observed older coworkers, and family members refuse smartphones and tablets. As a professor, this kind of attitude is unacceptable. Your students need an education infused with technology, and it’s your responsibility to become a tech-expert yourself."

A person can always learn and grow.  Professors have learned the art of how to remain tech-savy.  These habits contains habits that keeps the professor confident, focused, and fearless to just mention a few.  I like how the professors have embraced the fact that their students have knowledge that they do not have and that the professor is not ashamed about not knowing everything.

Checklist: Skills and Tools for Digitally-Literate Teachers

Teaching digital literacy has become an essential part of today’s education, especially after being mandated by the Common Core and other state equivalents. With so many new technologies out there, it’s easy for teachers to feel constantly behind. This can lead to teachers being overwhelmed, which in turn can lead to burnout. To address this problem, we compiled a list of “Must-Have” digital literacy skills (with a few bonuses for extra credit) to help teachers and administrators prioritize teacher digital literacy professional development.
