‘Technology doesn’t always make education better’

‘Technology doesn’t always make education better’ | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
What are the key questions that educators should ask when assessing new edtech?

One of the great myths the edtech industry tries to sell us is that it invented personalised learning.

Edtech companies trumpet the promise of using computers to teach, with students able to move at their own pace through the material in an individualised way, seeing exactly the content that they need to learn at precisely the right level for them, at just the moment they need to see it.

The problem is, it’s not new – and it’s not really personalised.

2020: The Year Of the Edtech Paradox

2020: The Year Of the Edtech Paradox | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
In many ways, 2020 has been THE year of edtech. Technology experienced a meaningful surge in adoption by schools, districts and parents. The industry saw large capital inflows and more edtech “unicorns” than in any other prior year. Mergers and acquisitions are booming. Edtech funds closed larger funds, and top-notch venture capital investors including a16z, Lightspeed and Union Square Ventures have developed investment theses on education.

Use of Twitter across educational settings: a review of the literature | International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education

Use of Twitter across educational settings: a review of the literature | International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education  | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The use of social media across the educational landscape is on the rise. Subsequently, the body of research on this topic is vibrant and growing. In this article, we present findings from a review of 103 peer-reviewed scientific studies published over the last decade (2007–2017) that address the use of Twitter for educational purposes across formal and informal settings. The majority of the studies reported in the literature are descriptive case studies carried out with students in North American and European higher education settings. Analysis of these studies signals Twitter as a useful tool for communication due to high accessibility, novelty, and real-time format. Students, teachers, and other stakeholders use it as a pedagogical tool to gain information, interact and engage with each other, participate in their respective communities of interests, and share their insights about specific topics. Moreover, Twitter has the potential to enhance students’ learning capabilities as well as improve their motivation and engagement due to its unique features and non-traditional teaching approach. Finally, our analysis advocates for carrying out further empirical studies focusing on digital trace data and inference, particularly in the developing countries.

5 All-Too-Common Ways Edtech Implementations Fail | EdSurge News

5 All-Too-Common Ways Edtech Implementations Fail | EdSurge News | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

On the surface, adopting technology to support teacher needs or student challenges isn’t terribly complex: define the problem you’re trying to solve, identify the right tools for the job, and implement the tools effectively and with fidelity.

In practice, these areas are fraught with challenges. End users are too often removed from the decision-making process during procurement. Educators argue that too many products don’t actually meet the needs of teachers or students. Still others worry that it is too easy to implement new and popular technology without considering whether it is research-based and effective.

Digital Fluency vs Digital Literacy

Digital Fluency vs Digital Literacy | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

I’ve been doing a bit of research on digital literacy/fluency over the past few months, wondering what initiatives and programs are currently being offered at our post-secondary institutions that build capacity for instructors to use digital tools effectively within a teaching & learning context.

Many organizations have identified a lack of digital literacy among post-secondary educators as a barrier to the adoption of educational technology. In 2014, the NMC Horizon Report (PDF) noted that;

With the pervasive use of technology inside our classrooms, pedagogical concerns related to the effectiveness of technology in transforming education and creating optimal learning experiences come to the surface. Every teacher drawing on technology in their instruction has probably, at a certain point in time, mulled over questions such as: does technology always work for every instructional task? Does it enhance students learning? How about distractive features that come with this technology. Do they affect students learning?
