The walled garden effect: why sharing doesn’t always create shared progress in education

The walled garden effect: why sharing doesn’t always create shared progress in education | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
One of the rewarding parts of working in education is that for the most part, people really want to be as collaborative and open as possible. Many organizations are doing valuable work collecting and sharing data on innovative schools for others in the field to learn from. By publishing this data, these organizations democratize access to information, which combats the inefficiency and exclusivity inherent in the word-of-mouth school discovery method. At least a dozen databases and lists (and likely more that we’re not aware of) have cropped up in the last few years to elevate stories and share data on innovative practices and school models.

Extreme learning analytics and student consent

Extreme learning analytics and student consent | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I’ve had various discussions recently about students consenting to learning analytics and whether they should be able to opt out. Institutions are understandably concerned not only to do the right thing ethically for their students but, perhaps more pressingly, to comply with legal requirements. The imminent imposition of the General Data Protection Regulation brings stricter data protection for citizens in the European Economic Area and is concentrating minds across Europe.

Digital Media + Learning: The Power of Participation

I want to take a moment to examine how data collection has changed for us who teach and assess students.

In the digitally augmented classroom, there should be concern for both corporate privacy and interpersonal privacy. While we have limited control over the corporate tracking and data-collection that takes place, it is possible to allow varying levels of interpersonal privacy in the digital classroom. To make participation highly visible, down to seeing who contributed what line in a paper or slide in a slideshow, brings in echos of the dreaded panopticon.

The Weaponization of Education Data

The Weaponization of Education Data | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As in previous years, it would be quite easy to fill a whole article in this series on “data insecurity,” on the data breaches and cyberattacks that continue to plague education – both schools and software. The issue extends well beyond education technology, of course, and in 2017 we witnessed yet again a number of high profile incidents (including some corporate admissions of breaches that had happened in years past): that over 140 million Social Security Numbers and other personal data had been stolen in a data breach at Equifax, for starters; that every single account at Yahoo – some 3 billion in all – had been affected in its 2013 breach.

Learning analytics: what types of product are available? | Learning Innovation

Learning analytics: what types of product are available? | Learning Innovation | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Every educational institution wants its learners to reach their full potential.  Learning analytics can help us to measure and predict student success using data relating to engagement, grades, retention, graduation and employability.  But what products are out there to enable institutions to improve on the indicators of success, and to help visualise and analyse the increasing amounts of data being collected around our students? How well do the various tools facilitate interventions with learners and help us to monitor the effectiveness of those interventions?
