Teaching Students about Their Digital Footprints

Teaching Students about Their Digital Footprints | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
College students have embraced a culture where everything is shared and captured in a selfie. Many don't think about the digital footprints left behind.

Forget digital footprint, think digital tatoo. Much harder to get rid of.

Living and Learning with Information Literacy –

Living and Learning with Information Literacy – | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As a librarian-in-the-making, I have had some experience with setting up different educational websites and training aids—I run the site for my small educational business, for example, but until my recent experience in my Information Literacy Instruction course, I wasn’t comfortable with the tools and speed librarians need to help patrons.

Tool literacy as a new process —  NeverEndingSearch

Tool literacy as a new process —  NeverEndingSearch | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Joyce Valenza writes: "We need to learn how to leverage the tools on our new desks.  We need to make conscious choices about the way we manage information and communication workflow in a way that is entirely anti-worksheet.   For any of the tools we use, we need to master notions of their affordances and constraints."

I had a teacher ask if I could teach her students app smashing. I explained that the project we just did with her class, using Google Slides, Google Cultural Institute, Nimbus Screenshot, and Google Hangout was exactly that. Joyce's article gives a much better explanation of how, and more importantly, why we need to a better job of thinking about the tools we use and teach.

10 Lesson Plans to Develop Digital Literacies

10 Lesson Plans to Develop Digital Literacies | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Over the last few months I have been working hard to develop a set of commercially available lesson materials. These lesson plans aren't specifically designed for English language learners, though they will be useful for students at higher levels who want stimulating skills based practice or for any teacher interested in developing a CLIL or content based approach to language learning. They were designed to enable any teacher to develop students in a way that is more closely aligned to the kinds of skills they will need to function effectively and critically in the digital world.

Here we can see how technology can support the process of learning a language by exploring in different ways. Using some visual input and different activities, students are expected to develop spoken fluency, reading comprehension, critical thinking and use of English. This is what this article contains, ten lesson plans that teachers can buy in order to improve their classes with technology.

5 tips for getting over your #edtech fears to engage and empower students

5 tips for getting over your #edtech fears to engage and empower students | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I have been lucky. I was on a computer at a young age, playing Math Blaster or Oregon Trail until my eyelids grew heavy and I had to crawl into bed. This is probably like today’s student playing Fortnight until the sun comes up. I don’t remember using technology in school but think about how powerful my learning experiences would have been with simulations and the ability to create.

Media-, News-, and Information-Literacy Resources for Students

Media-, News-, and Information-Literacy Resources for Students | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
After the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the world seems to be waking up to what educators have known for a long time: media literacy matters, especially as it relates to the news, social media, and the web. While the definition and specific skills of media literacy (as well as its companions, news literacy and information literacy) evolve with the media and technology landscape, the core objectives remain: that through media literacy, students learn to find, consume, and create media critically and develop a mindfulness about how media is made, by whom it is made, and for what purposes it is made. There are a lot of tools out there to help students build and practice these essential skills, and on this list we feature some of the best we've found. You'll find great apps and websites broken down into three core categories: those that help students evaluate media, those that help them create media, and those that steer students toward factual sources.

Technology as a facilitator - The symbiosis between technology and user education ~ libfocus - Irish library blog

Technology as a facilitator - The symbiosis between technology and user education ~ libfocus - Irish library blog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Autumn last year I and a colleague published a chapter in an anthology, published by National Library of Sweden, called “Technology as a facilitator” in Swedish “Teknik som facilitator”. Since we have worked together for such a long time, over 20 years, the purpose was to combine our experiences from change in technology and its effect on user education (library instructions). It was an exciting journey back in time and an interesting reflection in the rearview mirror on the symbiosis between the two.
