The rise of online learning in post-covid times has created a further need to look at the data privacy of users. Many had to learn to navigate online classes very quickly and school systems set up servers hastily in order to keep up with the sudden shift to fully virtual options. Recommended actions to increase user privacy include not publishing contact info or meeting links anywhere, giving parents the option to opt out of any sharing or to delete their child's information and anonymizing user names on the platform.

Strategic approaches to learning analytics in UK higher education - Jisc Repository

Strategic approaches to learning analytics in UK higher education - Jisc Repository | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Learning analytics cannot yet be considered a mature field in UK higher education. However, the use of data about learners and their learning to address areas such as attrition and curriculum enhancement is increasingly being investigated through projects at an institutional level. A recent survey by the UK Heads of eLearning Forum (HeLF), which elicited responses from 53 institutions, suggested that there had been rapid change in the adoption of learning analytics over the past two years. Those institution s “working towards implementation” had nearly doubled from 34% to 66%. Meanwhile, the proportion of respondents’ universities not implementing learning analytics at all had decreased from 47% to 13% (Newland & Trueman, 2017).

Let’s Ensure Data Analytics Improves the College Experience for Everyone | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
When EDUCAUSE members identified their top 10 priorities for 2017, it was clear that data analytics is expected to play a big role. Data-informed decision-making is No. 3 on the list, and data management and governance is No. 6. Other initiatives, such as student success and completion (No. 2) and strategic leadership (No. 4), also are leaning more heavily on data than ever before.

10 Ways Data Can Sabotage Your Teaching

10 Ways Data Can Sabotage Your Teaching | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Functionally, the purpose of assessment is to provide data to revise planned instruction.

In seeing what a student understands, the best path for moving forward towards mastery can be planned based on those results—the “data,” as it were.

While there are inherent (and perhaps crippling) flaws with any form of assessment (what is the best way to determine what a student understands?), assessment design is a topic for another day. For now, it can help to simply understand data better—for its benefits and perhaps more importantly, its limits.

Digital Media + Learning: The Power of Participation

I want to take a moment to examine how data collection has changed for us who teach and assess students.

In the digitally augmented classroom, there should be concern for both corporate privacy and interpersonal privacy. While we have limited control over the corporate tracking and data-collection that takes place, it is possible to allow varying levels of interpersonal privacy in the digital classroom. To make participation highly visible, down to seeing who contributed what line in a paper or slide in a slideshow, brings in echos of the dreaded panopticon.

The Quantified Self movement allows us to closely track data that is relevant to our everyday lives through the use of technology. Wearable devices such as watches, wristbands, head sets, and necklaces
can now record where we are, what we’re doing, how much time we’ve spent doing it, what our goals are, and how long it’s taking us to achieve them. While the movement initially focused on health and professional productivity, we’re now starting to see an increasing application of QS to both formal and informal learning settings.
