How do you motivate students who don't care about grades? You take a turn with badges in education and see how different results can come about.
rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, February 23, 2015 2:45 AM

Students have a particular liking for badges which they can flaunt to others. A badge is like a special privilege that all can see. I earned my badge after completing a MOOC session, although whether I will wear this badge is doubtful, but then for students at least it is about making the reward more attractive than just a certificate which will be put away in a folder or portfolio once it has been earned!

In my previous post, “My Beef With Badges,” I called on the emerging badging community to stop conflating our aspirations with our achievements, and to start sharing a more accurate picture of the challenges we all face. I also tried to make clear that I have been a part of the very problem I now aim to address.

7 Things You Should Know About Badges | EDUCAUSE.edu | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Badges are digital tokens that appear as icons or logos on a web page or other online venue. Awarded by institutions, organizations, groups, or individuals, badges signify accomplishments such as completion of a project, mastery of a skill, or marks of experience. Learners fulfill the issuer-specific criteria to earn the badge by attending classes, passing an exam or review, or completing other activities, and a grantor verifies that the specifications have been met and awards the badge. Numerous groups, organizations, community projects, and web entities currently issue badges, and they are gaining currency in higher education as well. Although many details remain for badges to be broadly accepted, they represent a different approach to credentials, one that places the focus on individual students and their learning accomplishments.

Digital Badges in Higher Education White Paper - Google Docs

This paper explores the potential of digital badges in higher education. A digital badge is a clickable graphic that contains an online record of 1) an achievement, 2) the work required for the achievement, 3) evidence of such work, and 4) information about the organization, individual, or entity that issued the badge. Mozilla has created an Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI) standard that includes a display platform called the Badge Backpack so that badge earners will have a free, hosted, public location for management and display of their digital badges. Thus, badges earned by individuals from disparate organizations that use custom badging platforms may be aggregated in one location for others to view.

Class Badges to Promote Digital Literacy | Cool Tools for 21st Century Learners

Class Badges to Promote Digital Literacy | Cool Tools for 21st Century Learners | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

by Susan Oxnevad

Class Badges [http://classbadges.com/ ] is a free online tool designed to help teachers use digital badges as rewards for accomplishing learning goals. The badges can be a useful tool for teachers to keep track of individual student accomplishments as they help learners focus on making progress.

I really like Class Badges because the badges serve as a useful reminder for teachers to work with students on an individual level to set goals and assess progress. If used appropriately, they can improve students' self-esteem as they work towards attainable goals. I believe this tool that can help teachers get a little closer to a 1-1  learning environment.
