Social Learning Culture to Better Engage Remote Workforce

Social Learning Culture to Better Engage Remote Workforce | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Social learning is about how people learn by observing, imitating, and modeling others. In this blog, we will see how we can tap into the power of social learning to reach remote workforce.

According to a 2018 Forbes report, around 50% of the U.S. population has already become remote workers. When asked about their biggest workplace challenges, 21% cited “loneliness” or lack of community as one of their main issues. This data reinforces the current global demand for remote friendly workplaces. To address this, organizations are trying to build an online community of learners by leveraging the social learning techniques.

Successfully Apply Social Learning to Your Existing eLearning Programs

Successfully Apply Social Learning to Your Existing eLearning Programs | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Your organization no doubt sees the value of an eLearning program. You may have invested in a user-friendly Learning Management System (LMS), on-demand training and the necessary number of developers to create sufficient content.  However, your results may not be what you expect if you don’t add a human touch to eLearning. You need to incorporate a social learning component.

Social Learning Theory was coined by Albert Bandura in 1977. Among its key components are the ideas that learning must be active and that it takes place in social contexts. This theory also espouses the view that learning occurs when people observe others.

30 Universal Strategies For Learning

As teachers, we’re all trying to better understand how people learn–not now they’re taught in terms of teaching strategies, but more so learning strategies–only not really strategies. Learning actions, or cognitive actions. Strategies for learning.

Self-directed and social learning will undoubtedly be at the core of any sort of future learning–both near and far future. But to improve learning in both self-directed and teacher-centered learning environments, it can be illuminating to look past the activities, projects, and courses to try to see what sort of brain-level actions learners are performing. Like push-ups, wind sprints, and weight training are physical actions that help train an athlete’s body, what kind of cognitive actions train a learner’s mind?

This post is a personal example of social learning and serendipity which led to learning about how acrostics can be used and the creation of three animated videos.

Last week I was following the conference hashtag #AHEConference2019  for the international Assessment in Higher Education conference and wishing I was there in person. However thanks to the many colleagues tweeting I was able to pick up some interesting points being shared. Two tweets in particular shared photos of slides for two of Professor Sally Brown’s presentations in which she had created acrostics to explore principles for feedback in one and learning outcomes in another.

Are You Prepared For The Future Of Social Learning?

Are You Prepared For The Future Of Social Learning? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"With the Internet exploding with information resources and tools for learning, teachers can be facilitators of information with a greater emphasis on explanation and critical thinking as opposed to the dissemination source. Formal learning systems have in some cases been slower to adopt this model, rightfully concerned with accuracy of material and consistency; yet with ever increasing numbers of individuals accessing information in learning environments, the necessity of these formal systems to adopt technological change is very clear."

Flexible learning publication highlighting new pedagogical ideas launched

Flexibility should be seen as a skill in its own right, rather than simply as an inclusive method of teaching in higher education.

This is just one of the findings from the most recent report on flexible learning by the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Flexible pedagogies: new pedagogical ideas, also found that developments in information technology appear to have a dual, even contradictory, influence on learning and teaching innovation. Flexible learning initiatives that use IT to enable deeper changes to learning and teaching practice have far greater credibility with academic staff and therefore will achieve more traction for embedding change at an institutional level.
