Leveraging Bloom’s Taxonomy to Elevate Discussion Boards in Online Courses | Faculty Focus

Leveraging Bloom’s Taxonomy to Elevate Discussion Boards in Online Courses | Faculty Focus | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The discussion board is certainly not new to the online classroom. In fact, some may argue that the discussion board is one of the most well-known and used tools in online courses. While the discussion board is ubiquitous within the different Learning Management Systems (LMS) that exist, and is consistently included in online courses as a way to collect formative assessment data and engage students, its use could be elevated by aligning Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives (Anderson, Krathwohl, & Bloom, 2001) with discussion board prompts. Focusing on the cognitive knowledge domain, Bloom’s Taxonomy provides a hierarchical framework of learning outcomes that instructors can use to create more interactive, diverse, and impactful ways for students to experience deeper learning (Mehta & Fine, 2019) and meaningful discourse surrounding course content.

Understanding Bloom's Taxonomy and Using It Effectively

Understanding Bloom's Taxonomy and Using It Effectively | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Most educators are familiar with Bloom's Taxonomy.  Proposed and created in 1956 by Benjamin Bloom and a committee of educators, it is a classification of the different objectives and skills students should learn from specific course content.  The taxonomy was updated in 2001 by Anderson and Krathwohl to focus on six levels of learning: Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, and Create.  As you can see below in the first image, Anderson and Krathwohl shifted the taxonomy from nouns to active verbs.

Eventually a hologram you can manipulate digitally–pass around the room like a tennis ball, then fling it into the ether….)

Oftentimes, when instructional designers are tasked with designing a course, one of the challenges that they face has to do with the design approach they take. While experienced instructional designers seem to have a better grasp of this, novices often struggle with selecting the right activities and exercises that truly reinforce learning.

6 Strategies For Teaching With Bloom's Taxonomy

6 Strategies For Teaching With Bloom's Taxonomy | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Bloom’s Taxonomy can be a powerful tool to transform teaching and learning.

By design, it focuses attention away from content and instruction, and instead emphasizes the ‘cognitive events’ in the mind of a child. And this is no small change.

For decades, education reform has been focused on curriculum, assessment, instruction, and more recently standards, and data, with these efforts only bleeding over into how students think briefly, and by chance. This means that the focus of finite teacher and school resources are not on promoting thinking and understanding, but rather what kinds of things students are going to be thinking about and how they’ll prove they understand them.

Bloom’s Taxonomy is a powerful teaching and learning tool that can help you shape nearly everything that happens in your classroom.

Why you would want to do this is another conversation, though I will say that, in brief, Bloom’s places the focus on student thinking and observable outcomes, and that is useful in formal learning contexts.

Many examinations and activities place emphasis on skills like remembering and understanding. Unfortunately, this leaves little room for incorporating the Bloom’s taxonomic levels of higher order thinking like analysis, evaluation, and creativity. We know from research that teaching our students higher-order thinking skills is one of the most beneficial steps we can take. After all, these are the skills they truly need to succeed beyond school, after all. But do our examinations and activities reflect this need? To help you find out, educator Andrew Churches has devised two very useful Bloom’s analysis tools that are available on his website Edorigami. These two tools specifically analyze the Bloom’s taxonomic levels of activities and assessments. Moreover, they investigate the balance between higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and lower-order thinking skills (LOTS). In doing so, they help you improve the taxonomic focus of your exams and activities or units. Download each tool by clicking on the image or the link below it.
