Should we be teaching knowledge or skills?

Should we be teaching knowledge or skills? | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it
A head of English gets to the heart of the curriculum debate and shares his X Factor-based teaching resource on using solo taxonomy...

Because if you believe in what Ian Gilbert calls The Great Educational Lie (do well at school and you'll get a good job) then passing exams is fine. But if you believe that "to succeed in business you need to break the rules" then we have a responsibility to teach content in a way that also teaches skills, dispositions and competencies needed to make our children indispensible in an uncertain future.

Some have asked me "why teach students in a digital environment if it's more work for you?"  Digital skills that the social media classroom seek to provide our students are going to become increasingly important in the workforce of tomorrow. We don't just teach content, we teach students; they will forget most lessons but if they have the tools to find the answers for themselves, our work will be done.

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it

This is an update to Bloom's Revised Taxonomy which attempts to account for the new behaviours and actions emerging as technology advances and becomes more ubiquitous. Bloom's Revised Taxonomy describes many traditional classroom practices, behaviours and actions, but does not account for the new processes and actions associated with Web 2.0 technologies, infowhelm (the exponential growth in information), increasing ubiquitous personal technologies or cloud computing.

Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America

Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it
Website featuring photographs and descriptions from the book Without Sanctuary by Hilton Als and James Allen, with postcards of lynchings in America.

This is a chilling website that documents a horrific part of America's past.  Lynchings were a communal activity that reinforced local identity and maintained structural, institutionalized racism.  Use with caution and judiciousness as it might not be appropriate for all grade levels.  Shown above is the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, on August 7, 1930, in Marion, Indiana.  This is very hard for me to view, but it is harder for me to pretend that it it wasn't a part of American History.

Poem by Billy Collins: "The History Teacher" | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it
Trying to protect his students' innocence he told them the Ice Age was really just the Chilly Age, a period of a million years when everyone had to wear sweaters. And the Stone Age became the Gravel Age, named after...

Read the poem...food for thought about the role of history teachers within society.

In educational circles, Bloom's taxonomy is frequently cited as a way to categorize whether learning is tapping into higher domains of thinking (as portrayed in this diagram here). This link will connect you to an interactive infographic that combines Bloom's Taxonomy (cognitive domain) with domains of knowledge. This link is worth looking at, even if most of our time will be focusing on Bloom’s taxonomy.

Currywurst on the Street

Currywurst on the Street | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it
Michael Slackman, The Times's Berlin Bureau Chief, looks into the city's obsession with a popular street dish that combines sausage, ketchup and curry powder.

The globalization of food, immigration and the diffusion of cultural practices are all richly displayed in this short clip.

Shelby Porter's curator insight, September 26, 2013 9:36 AM

The globalization of food is becoming more apparent in todays culture than ever before. More and more restaurants from different parts of the world are showing up and alot of the food we as Americans are familar with are taking on some new ethnic influences. The currywurst is a great example of one country's culinary favorite around the time of WWII and enhancing it with an American and Indian by way of London flavor. And now it is one of the most popular treats someone can buy while in Germany. Many of our cultures foods are being influenced by others now and flavors are beginning to mix as well as our idea of where foods come from. The diffusion of cultural practices as well as the globalization of food will only grow stronger as time goes on, and so will our taste for a new culinary delight.

Liam Michelsohn's curator insight, November 6, 2013 2:20 PM

Ahhh the currywurst on the street, well i thought this was great very informitive cultural video. The speical dish that is made and served among the streets in germany and all over,  it is thought to be a very weird and almost un appitizing meal to some one like my self.  However those food are very popular and prominate in there culture, just like certian foods, hotdog stands, flaffel carts and other foods that we enjoy have be come common in our culture. However I dont see currywurst hitting the streets of NYC any time soon.

Kenny Dominguez's curator insight, November 29, 2013 12:23 PM

The Currywurst sounds good but it seems that it will upset my stomach. I have a feeling it would. But it seems to be a hit were it is sold because that is what most people eat when they are on the streets burlin.

Syria's Political Situation in Historical Context

The Syrian government's crackdown on an uprising in 1982 was so brutal that Syrians rarely spoke about it. But now, some Syrians plan to mark the 30th anniversary of the events in Hama as they continue with the current uprising.
Fred Issa's curator insight, November 25, 2015 12:53 PM

The Syrian Uprising of 1982 was one of the most barbaric acts in our modern times. The people of Hama in 1982 were no friends to the current president of Syria's father. But the response was horrific. Assad's father, send in his brother with the army and Air Force, and shelled and bombed the city into total destruction. Something like 85,000 men, women, and children were killed. This is the same kind of ruthlessness that is shown today on all sides in the Syrian Civil War.

What would 100 years of progress bring?

What would 100 years of progress bring? | History and Social Studies Education | Scoop.it

This is a great counter-factual history, but also a glimpse into what people of 1911 imagined might be technologically possible.

Heather Ramsey's curator insight, February 6, 2013 7:25 PM

Industrialism created so much change in America in the late 19th and early 20th century, it's no wonder that people would have high expectations for what life would be like in another 100 years. What do you think of their suggestions? How far off were they?
