2014 is the year for Personalized Learning to take center stage in national and international discussions. The buzz is out. Yet, the information around personalized learning is still confusing. This new year will be the year that defines the term where we focus on the learner first.

What personalized learning is and how it can be optimized. Now that learning is available to "the masses", what is preventing "the masses" from taking advantage of learning opportunities?

I like to see good change and this looks like the right direction. Going to make the changes in vocabulary now.

Personalizing Education in a Standards-Based System | The Thinking Stick

Personalizing Education in a Standards-Based System | The Thinking Stick | E-Learning-Inclusivo (Mashup) | Scoop.it

Jeff Utecht provides food for thought on personalizing education and what it means for the learner. Kathleen McClaskey curated this and I know Jeff. I am so glad we are talking about this. What is the difference between personalization and differentiation and individualization?

Jeff writes:

"Does it really matter that every child learns the same thing or at the same time? Or is it more important that they just become a learner? Learning how to learn, unlearn, and relearn and having the skills and the passion to make it happen.

What if it was just a school's mission and vision, or in my school's case, our Definition of Learning that drove learning in our schools. What if at the end of every year kids had to show this: We value meaningful learning where students construct enduring understanding by developing and applying knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

Do we care what class it happens in? Do we really care about the content? Or can we stand in awe of the great work our kids can produce when we make it personal and allow their passion to show through."

Thank you Jeff - for your position on this. We started a new group in LinkedIn called "Personalized Learning" and hope you join in the conversations. Kathleen and I have come up with the conclusion that students need to know how they learn best so they can choose the appropriate learning opportunities and apply what they know and do in their way. We are still learning alot about this and collecting models, examples, and apps so learners can drive their own learning. Only thing I want to emphasize is that we as educators can change the learning environment so students can make their learning personal.
