The Journey of a Tweet: Infographic

The Journey of a Tweet: Infographic | Digital Collaboration and the 21st C. | Scoop.it

Twitter is a cultural phenomenon that has changed the way we communicate around the world. This infographic shows the literal journey of a tweet - from the initial tweet to the retweet and beyond.

This graph shows that a single tweet can cross social media channels in mere seconds. In this age of quick technology, people are getting information at such a rapid rate that it’s hard to keep up at times...

Check out the infographic for more interesting facts.

Understanding and reducing the spread of misinformation online

Gordon Pennycook, Ziv Epstein, Mohsen Mosleh, Antonio Arechar, Dean Eckles, David Rand

The spread of false and misleading news on social media is of great societal concern. Why do people share such content, and what can be done about it? In a first survey experiment (N=1,015), we demonstrate a disconnect between accuracy judgments and sharing intentions: even though true headlines are rated as much more accurate than false headlines, headline veracity has little impact on sharing. We argue against a “post-truth” interpretation, whereby people deliberately share false content because it furthers their political agenda. Instead, we propose that the problem is simply distraction: most people do not want to spread misinformation, but are distracted from accuracy by other salient motives when choosing what to share. Indeed, when directly asked, most participants say it is important to only share accurate news. Accordingly, across three survey experiments (total N=2775) and an experiment on Twitter in which we messaged N=5,482 users who had previously shared news from misleading websites, we find that subtly inducing people to think about the concept of accuracy increases the quality of the news they share. Together, these results challenge the popular post-truth narrative. Instead, they suggest that many people are capable of detecting low-quality news content, but nonetheless share such content online because social media is not conducive to thinking analytically about truth and accuracy. Furthermore, our results translate directly into a scalable anti-misinformation intervention that is easily implementable by social media platforms.

Digital CitizenShip: Social Media AND Privacy

Digital CitizenShip: Social Media AND Privacy | Digital Collaboration and the 21st C. | Scoop.it

Social Media is about sharing, right!? That’s WHAT it is mostly, BUT there are the HIDDEN commercial intents which MOST people don’t see (OUR Privacy is sold and OUR friends one too…) and there isALSO OUR responsibility about it WHEN WE share, WE will discuss in detail here…

First of ALL, there isn’t ANYTHING for FREE in this world, even the death costs the life and a lot of money for the funerals ;)

SO… Let us analyse WHY WE get Social Media and other services on the internet for “FREE“. BTW: there isn’t anything for FREE, WE pay with OUR information which the companies are gathering!

Socialize Social Media!: A Manifesto

Socialize Social Media!: A Manifesto | Digital Collaboration and the 21st C. | Scoop.it

Social media services can ultimately be run as public utilities, ad-free, at cost, in a democratic spirit and for social ends, in their enormous variety—or else digital society can become ever more subservient to the single end of the accumulation of private capital. The choice is between social life as an advertising platform and socialized social media. Tweeps and Facebook friends, unite! You have nothing to lose but some ads! (Except all the time you’re wasting. But you were already doing that.)

How Are We Using Social Media? [INFOGRAPHIC]

How Are We Using Social Media? [INFOGRAPHIC] | Digital Collaboration and the 21st C. | Scoop.it

Did you know that between 2011 and 2012, time spent on social media increased by some 30 billion minutes, representing a year-on-year increase of 37 percent?

But, according to one study, while Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest remain popular with users aged 30 and over, it’s the formerly niche social platforms such as Reddit, Github and DeviantArt that can boast the highest representation amongst the important 18-29 demographic.

Digital agency iAcquire partnered with SurveyMonkey to track the behaviour of social media users, presenting their key findings in this infographic...

Niet echt verrassend trends, maar goed om even te zien. En gebaseerd op op Amerikaans onderzoek, want ik geloof niet dat Reddit, Github and DeviantArt veel in NL gebruikt worden.
