Picture the following diverse scenarios: A librarian in Utah develops and shares a plugin for an open source repository system that is reused by libraries in three other states; a curator in New York City improves the documentation for open source exhibition software that is used by staff members at museums and libraries around the country to create more dynamic presentations of historical artifacts; a network of libraries bands together to develop a common system that makes it easier for other libraries to provide Americans access to ebooks; a nonprofit organization develops and runs a series of workshops to equip librarians around the country to install, deploy, configure, and connect open source tools to acquire, preserve, and provide access to digital objects; a regional library association runs a residency program to place recent library school graduates into positions at cultural heritage organizations in order to run significant digital curation activities and share what they learn. LYON, – 19 August 2014
World Library and Information Congress in Lyon – The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) today announced a new grant for international advocacy activities in support of access to digital information. The investment will develop libraries’ ability to react to emerging issues in the digital environment, increase awareness within the public library community of the link between this emerging environment and their work, and create capacity to undertake advocacy activities in support of policy change. Public access to ICTs, copyright and licensing or eBooks and eLending are just some of the issues being tackled by policymakers at national, regional and international levels, often without satisfactory results for libraries and their users. As a result, libraries can often find themselves having to work in policy environments that are not sensitive to their issues and services to the public in the digital information environment are degraded." United by a passion for books and reading, volunteers across the nation have made it possible for the African Library Project to deliver its one millionth book this month. Founded by a Portola Valley woman in 2005, the nonprofit group was created to increase literacy in a country whose population has the highest percentage of illiteracy in the world. It was during a family vacation in Lesotho, a small mountainous region in southern Africa, that founder Chris Bradshaw realized establishing libraries could have a profound effect on increasing literacy. She began working closely with local teachers and community leaders, and it expanded from there. Reaching the one millionth book "is a real statement about the people in this country and just what a generous spirit they have in wanting to help do good in the world and recognizing the importance of literacy for any civilization to progress," Bradshaw said. The tiny libraries perched in front of houses throughout the Twin Cities are taking a 6,000-mile journey to Africa this year. ... The popular "Little Free Libraries,'' which look like oversized mailboxes, have paired up with the nonprofit Books for Africa. The colorful wooden libraries, shaped like schools or cottages, are expected to be open for business in Ghana in the months ahead. "We've wanted to expand to Africa, and we saw Books for Africa as the perfect partner,'' said Todd Bol, co-founder of Little Free Libraries, launched in Hudson, Wis., in 2009. Via Karen du Toit

Inna K(o)uper: CLIR blog has recently posted a piece on re-skilling for librarians by Christa Williford, focusing on digital humanities librarianship. What kind of skills do librarians need in order to be relevant in contemporary research environments? The list can be pretty long, moreover, there might be multiple lists. Another list was proposed in a report that Christa mentioned, “Re-skilling for research” by Research Libraries UK (RLUK). The report contains results of a series of studies that aimed to map the needs of researchers onto tasks to be undertaken by subject librarians. The report is long, but the message is the same over and over: librarians’ roles and skills are quite limited and traditional; they do not match the needs. Subject librarians are not involved at the early stages of research that involve conceptualization and planning. Most of the services are still offered in the areas of literature search and information management (how to store and organize everything). Services that are related to data collection, management, analysis and preservation are in their infancy at best. Via Karen du Toit
