Using Design Principles to Build a Culture of Innovation

Using Design Principles to Build a Culture of Innovation | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

We’re celebrating 10 years of exploring the role that design thinking can play in schools. In that time, we’ve learned a lot about building creative school cultures based on two essential design practices: changing your point of view and prototyping. Below are some of the most effective practices we’ve seen.

OECD: The world must invest in education technology - Digital Innovation is critical

OECD: The world must invest in education technology - Digital Innovation is critical | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it
We recently told you about Canada’s blossoming tech scene. Now, some of the world’s biggest education influencers are gathering in Toronto to shape our schools of the future. Andreas Schleicher, a Director at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is just one acclaimed speaker who’ll be tackling themes of big data, gamification, social media, coding and digital culture at …

As emphasized in the excerpt below, I picture this as the old serfdom... Those who are fully digitally literate will live in the castle and those who are not will not. Further, they will be woefully ignorant of what is going on within those walls.  We must make being digital not just trendy but instead create a culture where people realize that it is a landscape that has become an intricate part of living on the planet.  It is not 'other' and people there are not 'those people' but rather a fully integrated part of humanity.

"“Students unable to navigate through a complex digital landscape will no longer be able to participate fully in the economic, social and cultural life around them,” he explained."

Green Innovation: First Bio-building Powered by Algae Opens in Hamburg

Green Innovation: First Bio-building Powered by Algae Opens in Hamburg | Didactics and Technology in Education | Scoop.it

The world's first algae-powered building is being piloted in Hamburg.

Designed by multinational firm Arup, features panel glass bioreactors on a facade containing microalgae that generate biomass and heat, serving as a renewable energy source.

The systems provide insulation for the building- 129 bioreactors have been fitted to the southwest and southeast faces of the building. They are controlled by an energy management center in which solar thermal heat and algae are harvested and stored to be used to create hot water.

Jan Wurm, Arup’s Europe Research Leader, said: 'Using bio-chemical processes in the facade of a building to create shade and energy is a really innovative concept.

'It might well become a sustainable solution for energy production in urban areas, so it is great to see it being tested in a real-life scenario.'

The news comes after Arup announced their vision for the future of skyscrapers which suggested that buildings would be 'living' buildings powered by algae that respond automatically to the weather and the changing needs of inhabitants...

I am interested to follow this story and to learn more details about the specific sources for the algae and a bit more of the science behind it.
