Neat - history of NASA visualizations (fluids, air, etc). What's really amazing is that we've gone from one GPU core to NVIDIA Tesla Kepler K20X with 2688 CUDA Cores at 3.95 Tflops! Perfect for Seismic processing, CFD, CAE, Financial computing, Computational chemistry and Physics, Data analytics, Satellite imaging, Weather modeling.

As Jed Fisher - rightly said this is insane. The highlight of any siggraph is never the sales floor shows - but the the technical papers and conversations with attendees - its there where you get to glimpse the future of graphics and simulation and this years technical papers preview is outstanding. Should be an awesome event.

This is insane. Every year, year after year, computer graphics forges ahead. The great quote from Bladerunner - "More real than real", we are getting there. I highly recommend watching this. I was thirteen years old when I first read Alan Kay's dynabook paper. It had been published 11 years earlier and it described computers unlike any I had yet to see. The paper is probably one of the more inspiring computer research concept papers I have read over the years and its certainly one i have gone back and re-read .when looking for inspiration. Paul Ford has an interesting contrast in the visions of computing as described by Alan Kay and the Dynabook and facebooks's more recent vision with Facebook Home. While a little contrived in placed the article is an interesting comparison and one which helps inform discussions around human computer interaction design on todays devices. Worth a read.

WiSee is a novel interaction interface that leverages ongoing wireless transmissions in the environment (e.g., WiFi) to enable whole-home sensing and recognition of human gestures. Since wireless signals do not require line-of-sight and can traverse through walls, WiSee can enable whole-home gesture recognition using few wireless sources (e.g., a Wi-Fi router and a few mobile devices in the living room).

The output of DARPA’s capstone ISR processing program will help analysts in multiple industries (not just defence and military) to make sense of the huge volumes of intelligence-rich information available to them from existing sensors and data sources. It will be worth tracking the BAE team and DARPA reports that are made public over the period of the program at conferences to gain insights into display modalities used and types of data fusion techniques employed to see implications and opportunities for civilian applications.

Douglas Engelbart, a legendary American inventor and computing icon who invented the first computer mouse and helped develop much of the modern PC user interface, passed away last night, according to his family.

I first learned about Doug Engelbart thanks to Howard Rheingold's Tools for Thought - a book that massively shaped the way I think about computers. As a student and then simulation and HCI researcher, Engelbart's work, thoughts and insights were a continual source of inspiration. Sorry to hear of his passing today.

Understanding how our perception system and sense of time and space work are increasingly key to how we design great user interfaces and user expereinces. Apollo Robbins is one of my favourite entertainers - a magician pickpocket, who in the National Geographic series BrainGames - explains how our perception and attention can be manipulated and managed to distract and misfocus. Great article by Adam Green in the New Yorker on his background, work and approach to what he does. If you like magic and interested in human perception its well worth a read.

Researchers in the University of Minnesota's College of Science and Engineering have developed a new noninvasive system that allows people to control a flying robot using only their mind.

The study goes far beyond fun and games (though how much fun could you have with this? :-) ) and has the long term potential to help people who are paralyzed or have neurodegenerative diseases.The study was published today in IOP Publishing's Journal of Neural Engineering. In 2004/2005 our old Creator product was used to build a concept 3D fault guided maintenance application for jet engines. The concept was sensors in the jet engine would detect state and inform the ground grew over a wireless connection maintenance need - and a 3d guided mainteance app would use the sensor data to drive the interactive electronic manual. As sensor costs plummet, big data becomes established and mobile and wifi has driven advanced networked computing platforms into everyone's pocket - that concept now becomes very prescient. For manufacturers (and interface developers) sensor driven maintenance and performance measurement platforms are going to be a key new business growth area in the coming years. Sensors and networks connect data. Software augments hardware. Insight drives opportunity. Interesting times.
