I started using Second Life six years ago, while studying for my Postgraduate Diploma in Education (specializing in e-Learning Pedagogy). Since then, I've explored many other Virtual Worlds/Grids, like Kitely, InWorldz, other public and private OpenSim grids, as well as Sim-on-a-Stick (SoaS), and even the very promising (now apparently very dead) virtual-world-on-a-browser Cloud Party. Recently, I had the opportunity to share my views on the potencial of Second Life and other VW for education/training with educators who have never used any of these platforms. Via elearning hoje

Educators are souring on virtual worlds, as evidenced by declining participation in online forums, in virtual conference attendances and education-related destinations on the Second Life grid.
Kim Flintoff's insight:
As a result, the use of virtual environments like Second Life seems to be in decline.
“Educators still using the environment appear to be those who are comfortable with the environment,” said Kevin Feenan, the founder of the Rockcliffe University Consortium. “What you see now is more selective and targeted use by a smaller sub-set of the educational community.”

The third annual Second Life MOOC (SLMOOC16) will take place from April 1-30, 2016 on WizIQ (click here to access the course). The theme of the current MOOC is “Connecting in Virtual Worlds. Communities of Practice” There is a plethora of communities in virtual worlds promoting education and learning through connecting online via web technologies such as Second Life. The MOOC will focus on connecting online for collaborative learning and teaching around the world through virtual worlds like Second Life, Minecraft or OpenSim. The live presentations will include the speakers’ reflective process on teaching and learning in fully online and blended learning formats.

Harnessing the power of the virtual world could even lead to new forms of obesity treatment, according to the team from the University of Missouri.

I wander what would be the impact if the person had created their alter-ego can’t change themselves to it? They have successfully experimented with their new self, like it, like it very much even, but then unable to change themselves into that. Could this impose a greater risk?
