The Open Professionals Education Network (OPEN),http://open4us.org, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has created free services aligned with the U.S. Department of Labor’s grant requirements and designed to support your project.
The Open Professionals Education Network (OPEN) will provide free support and technical assistance to all grantees of the $2 billion Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College & Career Training (TAACCCT, http://www.doleta.gov/taaccct) grant program from the U.S. Department of Labor.
OPEN will help grantees meet the provisions laid out in the solicitation for grant applications, including the CC BY open licensing requirement. OPEN services will be provided by Creative Commons (CC), Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative (OLI), Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) and the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges (SBCTC), which have individual but complementary areas of expertise in openness and the design of educational resources.

Open Educational Resources (OER). OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license, such as the Creative Commons Attribution license required by DOL, that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. "Digital learning and recent trends in Open Educational Resources (OER) are enabling fundamental changes in the education world, expanding the educational offer beyond its traditional formats and borders. New ways of learning, characterised by personalisation, engagement, use of digital media, collaboration, bottom-up practices and where the learner or teacher is a creator of learning content are emerging, facilitated by the exponential growth in OER available via the internet. Europe should exploit the potential of OER much more than is currently the case. This requires good computer skills, but some Member States are still lagging behind as seen in the Education and Training Monitor 2012, with 9 Member States with over 50% of 16-74 year olds with no or low computer skills. While the use of ICT in education and training has been high on the policy agenda, critical elements are not in place to enable digital learning and OER to be mainstreamed across all education and training sectors. A coherent strategy at EU level could address the scope, size and complexity of the challenges in support of actions of the Member States and the entire chain of stakeholders."

Este Foro Regional es parte de varios eventos preparatorios de la Conferencia Mundial sobre Recursos Educativos Abiertos (REA)-Open Educational Resources (OER)-, que se celebrará en París del 20 al 22 de junio de 2012. El propósito del Foro es crear conciencia global en la Conferencia Mundial mostrar las políticas locales, expertos e iniciativas de REA. Servirá también como una oportunidad para la elaboración de una Declaración sobre REA y un llamado a los gobiernos para apoyar el desarrollo y uso de los REA.
Actualmente existe una gran oportunidad para la apropiación cultural y curricular de software, aplicaciones, contenidos reusable e iniciativas destinadas a la gestión de dichos recursos de parte de los líderes de la gestión del aprendizaje: los/las docentes de nuestros países.

Over the past two years, I've been working with my district to transition from the popular textbook towards Open Educational Resources, or OER. One of the leading benefits of OER options is that they are free and open to educators. That in itself is a reason to inquire. Making the transition to OERs can be quite daunting as it's not just a matter of accessing open content but repurposing it and digitizing your own to suit your students' needs. I find that using OERs in combination with cloud computing, mobile assisted seamless learning and field trips into virtual worlds, works well with my language students. However, what works within my teaching context may not be appropriate for yours. In my opinion, it's not just about introducing new technologies and pedagogies because they are trending, but doing a thorough analysis of what is needed within a specfic context before transforming your teaching practices, as these transformations will influence your students' learning environment and learning outcomes.

Are you ready to move away from textbooks and use Open Education Resources (OER)? This post provides links to 24 sites that provide free resources.
Perhaps you are wondering why schools are choosing to use free curriculum. Michael Gorman provides a list of ten reasons in this post that include:
* Provides opportunity to make learning more authentic by giving you the ability to localize learning
* Can provide differentiations and allow educator to adapt to their students’ needs
An explanation is provided for each link he provides so you get a sense of what is available, and materials are available for students from elementary school through college. Below are a few of the sites listed.
* SAS Curriculum Pathways - a resource that has been around for a number of years and continues to innovate. The website states “The products make learning more profound and efficient, not simply more entertaining.”
* Concord Consortium - a website that provides excellent STEM resources with hundreds on interactive, research based activities.
* Vision Learning - Peer reviewed materials for learning science available in English and Spanish that emphasize science as a process (inline with the new Next Generation Science Standards)
* CK12.org - CK12 is now focused on STEM and provides a wide variety of free courses from Arithmatic to Probability to Calculus in the area of math (a total of nine math courses); Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Technology, Astronomy and Engineering; a few xourses are available for English and History and there is a new course in Economics. CK12 also provides support through a variety of resources including: studyHELP, FlexMath, Braingenie and I Need a Pencil (SAT prep). One of the older sites they continue to revise courses and materials to meet the needs of todays students.
