Neelie Kroes blog - Protecting kids online: the industry setting new benchmarks for Safer Internet Day 2013 - European Commission

Neelie Kroes blog - Protecting kids online: the industry setting new benchmarks for Safer Internet Day 2013 - European Commission | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
European Commission

There are many different people who need to help build a better internet for kids. The private sector, in particular, can do a lot: after all, there the ones who often create and run websites, software, networks and devices. Showing that they’re “thinking safety” wouldn’t just be good for kids – it would be good for their bottom line: many children and parents do worry about this subject, and it’s time they saw the private sector as part of the solution, not part of the problem.

So I’m delighted that our “Internet coalition” of 31 leading companies, which we set up just over a year ago, has now reported: setting a new online industry benchmark for child protection. And look at how much progress has been committed after one year of collective work across sectors!

- Tools to report online abuse or bullying are now becoming universal.

- More and more of the devices you see for sale (from computers and mobiles, to games consoles and connected TV sets) will have parental control options.

- Age ratings, a long-standing and well-known feature for movies and video games, are starting to appear for apps and online content too – and the coalition will be working further on aligning systems to help this.

I will follow closely and make sure these leading companies deliver on their commitment in 2013 and beyond. And I would like to see the whole industry moving in the direction of child safety by default.

Safeguarding Your Digital Life: How to Stay Safe in 2013

Safeguarding Your Digital Life: How to Stay Safe in 2013 | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

As 2012 draws to an end, it's fair to say it's been a very busy year for cybercriminals! So what have we learnt from the past year and what do we need to be wary of in 2013 to ensure that both our data and our wallet remain protected?

Despite common beliefs, one thing we have learnt in 2012 is that Apple definitely isn't immune from malware. Over the past year we have seen a significant rise in the number of attacks targeting MacOS X computers - the most notable being the "Flashfake/Flashback" Trojan.

Appearing late in 2011, the Trojan became really popular in 2012 with estimations that it infected nearly 700,000 Macs, making it the biggest MacOS X infection to-date. Exploiting a vulnerability in Java, the malware occurs when victims visit infected websites, allowing the Trojan to be downloaded directly onto their computers. Infected users can then have their computers watched and controlled remotely by hackers, leaving them vulnerable to data theft and fraud.

It's no surprise that Macs have become key targets for attack. Apple products are popular with many influential politicians and prominent businessmen; therefore the information stored on these devices is particularly sensitive and valuable to cybercriminals.

====================================================

===> So Mac users be warned - this threat is only going to continue to grow! <===

EU and US working together to build a better Internet for kids - European Commission

EU and US working together to build a better Internet for kids - European Commission | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Neelie KROES: European Commission...

Protecting children is a priority for all of us. We are all aware of the risks that kids face online; we all want to avoid them; and we all want to do that without losing the many benefits of an open, innovative online world – benefits for the young and old.

So I’m delighted that yesterday we in the EU joined forces with the US. When I personally met US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to sign a declaration on this important issue.
Did you know, the average EU 9 to 16-year-old spends about an hour and a half each day online? Often they’re doing that from a computer in their bedroom, or from their mobile. And using devices, services, and content from all over the world. All in all, that’s a big change, and a big challenge; but also a big opportunity.

===> Because there’s a chance to build a better Internet for kids. <===

I taught my niece already 10 years ago as she was 4 1/2 and that worked perfectly! Kids are learning very quickly THE reflexes up from the moment that they understand the difference between GOOD and BAD, that's the moment where parents can start with it.

Also on that age they know the colors RED and GREEN, where GREEN is for GOOD and RED for BAD, here one can show them the following programs as:

SID Kit for Schools - Safer Internet Day

SID Kit for Schools - Safer Internet Day | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Welcome, and thank you for joining us to celebrate Safer Internet Day (SID) 2013, taking place on Tuesday 5 February 2013 with the theme ‘Online rights and responsibilities’ and the slogan ‘Connect with respect’.

In 2013, for the second year running, we have again produced a SID Kit for Schools (and other educators), to bring together some great resources for raising online safety awareness.

Click on the links to the right to explore.

You can use the resources as best suits your local circumstances. For example, you may choose to use all or a selection of the resources, or you may choose to take parts of the kit and adapt them to your own needs. Likewise, although Safer Internet Day is celebrated on a particular day, you may choose to raise the profile of online safety over a day, week or month, depending on what is appropriate in your individual setting.

And, as this year’s theme focuses on ===>  ‘Online rights and responsibilities’,

– for example the ===> rights and responsibilities of parents and carers, educators, and industry, as well as the rights and responsibilities of children and young people themselves in their online lives. <===

EU and US sign joint declaration to make the internet safer for kids

EU and US sign joint declaration to make the internet safer for kids | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
European Commission - Press Release - European Commission MEMO Brussels, 20 November 2012 European Commission Vice President for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes and the U.S.

Digital Agenda: EU and US sign joint declaration to make the internet safer for kids

European Commission Vice President for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes and the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano have today signed a Joint Declaration in London, committing to make the Internet a safer and better place for children.

In the Declaration, Vice President Kroes and Secretary Napolitano:

- agree to implement joint campaigns on the occasion of an annual Safer Internet Day. As a first step, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security intends to participate in the EU’s Safer Internet Day for young people on February 5, 2013.

- commit to contribute to international cooperation in fighting child sexual abuse online in the immediate future. This will build on existing work by the Virtual Global Taskforce and Interpol on law enforcement collaboration to combat child sexual abuse worldwide. International cooperation is essential if we are to be effective in fighting child sexual abuse online.

- acknowledge that parents and guardians need to trust the content and services their children access and commit to continue working with industry and other stakeholders so that parents and children can make informed choices online.
This declaration complements other European Commission initiatives to keep children save and confident in the digital world. These include the EU Strategy for a safer internet and better internet content for children and teenagers presented earlier this year (see IP/12/445) and a Commission-brokered coalition of top tech & media companies to make the internet a better place for our kids. see IP/11/1485)
