Deloitte predicts that in 2013 more than 90 percent of user-generated passwords, even those considered strong by IT departments, will be vulnerable to hacking.

Inadequate password protection may result in billions of dollars of losses, declining confidence in Internet transactions and significant damage to the reputations of the companies compromised by attacks.

As the value of the information protected by passwords continues to grow, attracting more hack attempts, high-value sites will likely require additional forms of authentication.

Tips for Creating Secure Student Passwords

Tips for Creating Secure Student Passwords | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The most common causes of inappropriate behavior or suspected ‘password hacks’ are:

- Using a generic username and password for all students.

- Failure to use unique passwords for each student.

- The teacher creates student accounts with a different usernames but the same password for all students or a standard approach to assigning passwords that allows students to easily guess other students’  passwords.

- Students telling other students (or siblings) their username and password.

- Failing to log out of accounts or using ‘Remember my password’ on shared computers.

It's World Password Day, Change Yours

It's World Password Day, Change Yours | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Today is World Password Day, a holiday that’s here to remind us that our privacy is as safe as we make it be.

The day was first created by Intel Security and support for the idea has picked up. There are currently some 170 organizations, including Toshiba, Dell and Microsoft, and they’re asking Internet users to make sure that they change their passwords.

The concept came as Intel was thinking about a security education program. It’s not exactly a secret that people don’t change their passwords as the years go by, even though servers may fall prey to hackers and data can be stolen.

Some Internet companies that were vulnerable to the bug have already updated their servers with a security patch to fix the issue. This means you'll need to go in and change your passwords immediately for these sites.

Even that is no guarantee that your information wasn't already compromised, but there's also no indication that hackers knew about the exploit before this week. The companies that are advising customers to change their passwords are doing so as a precautionary measure.

The Instagram Scam That Tricked 100,000 Users Into Giving Away Passwords

The Instagram Scam That Tricked 100,000 Users Into Giving Away Passwords | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
An app called InstLike promised free likes and followers on Instagram, but asked users to provide their usernames and passwords, turning them into a botnet.

Moreover, a user would get 20 free Likes if he used the hashtag #instlike_com in his own photo captions. A search on Instagram reveals that more than 500,000 photos already contain that hashtag.

All these features made InstLike a sophisticated ecosystem that employed thousands of voluntary "zombie" accounts — but it depended on their naiveté and willingness to give up their passwords.

For Narang, who is experienced in the realm of social media-based scams, the sheer volume of people involved is scary.
