IoT: Don't Forget Privacy And Security While Racing To The Price Bottom

IoT: Don't Forget Privacy And Security While Racing To The Price Bottom | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
There is no doubt that companies of all shapes and sizes are increasing their spend in internet-of-things (IoT) technology. In fact, IDC projects this to be a $1.4 trillion market by 2021. With the increased spend and demand by consumers for low-price and high-value IoT devices, makers of these connected technologies have put a premium on affordability. The race to the bottom on price has inadvertently created major risks for organizations and consumers, according to PwC’s “Uncovering the Potential of the Internet of Things” report.

The pressure is on, and we see many makers of connected devices that produce IoT products as inexpensively as possible skipping important steps such as the design of security and privacy protections. This is generating significant new risks that are not widely understood during a time when consumers are more concerned about price than privacy and security. Risks include physical, software, encryption and network attacks, all of which could have wide-ranging effects on our daily lives, from taking over a connected car to obtaining sensitive data from a connected home to accessing a private network via a wearable device.

Also, there are societal concerns, including getting access to valuable intellectual property, sabotage to companies or governments and espionage. Consumer-focused companies need to ensure they are meeting their customers’ concerns. Simply put, the proper cybersecurity and privacy measures can aid businesses in seeing the full potential of IoT.

'I have nothing to hide' is killing the privacy argument

'I have nothing to hide' is killing the privacy argument | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
We all have something to hide.
The problem with the “nothing to hide” argument is: we’ve all got plenty to hide.

Just today, did you pick your nose? Change clothes? Have sex? Take a shower? Go to the bathroom? Sing off-key in the car on the way to work? Or, maybe you sent an email or text message, a racy photo on Snapchat, or said something inflammatory about your boss.

I bet, if pressed, you’d prefer that most, if not all, of these actions remained private.

And that’s okay.

Privacy is a key part of all our lives. But now that our lives are drifting into the online space, and more with each passing year, why the disconnect between offline and online privacy? The former is desired and expected, while the latter is lauded as wrong and sometimes even criminal.

Separating the desire for privacy from the desire to do something illegal is where it all starts. Too often the two are interwoven into a blanket statement that all those who desire privacy online are doing so out of the necessity to hide nefarious actions.

Apple CEO Tim Cook castigates Silicon Valley rivals over privacy, and he’s right | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Speaking remotely to an Electronic Privacy Information Center crowd honoring him last night, Apple CEO Tim Cook had some choice words about how other tech companies do business.

I’m speaking to you from Silicon Valley, where some of the most prominent and successful companies have built their businesses by lulling their customers into complacency about their personal information. They’re gobbling up everything they can learn about you and trying to monetize it. We think that’s wrong. And it’s not the kind of company that Apple wants to be.

We don’t think you should ever have to trade it for a service you think is free but actually comes at a very high cost. This is especially true now that we’re storing data about our health, our finances and our homes on our devices.

We believe the customer should be in control of their own information. You might like these so-called free services, but we don’t think they’re worth having your email, your search history and now even your family photos data mined and sold off for god knows what advertising purpose. And we think some day, customers will see this for what it is.

Google's new 'My Account' lets you tweak privacy and security settings

Google's new 'My Account' lets you tweak privacy and security settings | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

When Google's not tracking what sites users visit online so it can target-marketthem, its snoopy Street View cars are driving around and sniffing unsecured wireless networks and their passwords, usernames, and private email.

But here's something else Google knows about us: even though 93% of us think it's important to control access to our personal information, and in spite of the fact that 90% of us care about the type of information that's collected about us, a measly 9% of us feel we have "a lot" of control over our data, according to a recent Pew study.

Well, Google wants to change that feeling of helplessness, it says.

That's why the company announced on Monday that it had launched My Account, a new dashboard designed to make it easier for users to control the settings related to their privacy and data.

As well, Google launched a new site that answers questions about privacy and security.

Qu'est-ce que le Big Data – et quel impact a-t-il sur ma vie ? | Le surfeur transparent | #ICT #Privacy

Qu'est-ce que le Big Data – et quel impact a-t-il sur ma vie ? | Le surfeur transparent | #ICT #Privacy  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Social media is an increasingly important part of students’ lives. According to a recent study by Common Sense Media, the average teen spends over an hour a day using social media, and only 3 percent of the time tweens and teens spend online is focused on creation vs. consumption. To be true digital citizens, our students need teachers who model pro-social, creative, and responsible social media use.

Hacking is so easy these days, even non-hackers can do it. Some kinds of hacking, that is. Like public wifi, for example. To spy on people's Internet browsing while they're sipping a cup of brew, you don't need to be a pro.

Why do digital rights matter?

As we increasingly conduct our lives online – shopping, socializing and sharing information – our digital rights, particularly the rights to privacy and freedom of expression, are becoming more important. We need to understand how our data is being used by companies, governments and internet giants such as Facebook and Google. Is it being handled fairly and scrupulously, or sold or shared without our consent?

Revelations about surveillance programmes and digital hacking have sparked political and diplomatic wrangles. National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden has called for new international laws to protect data privacy, arguing that now we know about mass data surveillance it is time to “assert our traditional and digital rights so that we can protect them”.

Case in point: My group has just released a new preprint (get it here) that shows how the WiFi information routinely collected by your smartphone can easily be converted to precise information about your location. WiFi routers reveal where you live, work, and spend your leisure time.

While your phone may have told you that WiFi helps “improve location accuracy”, it may come as a surprise that:

  • A majority of apps in the store have access to the list of routers around you (scanned every 20 seconds).
  • Your Android smartphone by default scans for WiFi routers even if you disable WiFi.
