How to Be a Better Listener | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Couples often come in and say, “We need help with our communication,” and the presumption is that they need to become better communicators–by which they mean better talkers. But the best thing you can do for your relationship is become a better listener.

Here are some tips for improving your listening with everyone in your life–your partner, friends, colleagues, kids. They’ll all benefit, and so will you.1)  Notice when you’re just waiting to talk.

From tinkering to transformation: Strengthening school district central office performance - Education - AEI

From tinkering to transformation: Strengthening school district central office performance - Education - AEI | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
US school district central offices must tackle the mismatch between new school performance demands and traditional central office work and capacity.
Gust MEES's insight:

A MUST read!!!

However, central offices have traditionally focused on business and compliance functions rather than on supporting schools in their efforts to help all students realize ambitious learning goals.

===> To address this mismatch between new performance demands and long-standing central office work and capacity, district leaders must set aside old ways of working and fundamentally transform their central offices. <===

This is valuable for ALL Edu-Systems worldwide!!!

Cyber security – it’s something our IT boffins take care of, isn’t it?

Cyber security – it’s something our IT boffins take care of, isn’t it? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Is this something your board members might say? If it is, you’re not alone. Our recent Boardroom Cyber Watch Survey highlighted that despite cyber-threats potentially impacting on many mission-crit...

PAS 555 is very clear that effective cyber security isn’t just something your ‘IT boffins can take care of’, it’s about making the right security investment by assessing the risks and addressing people and processes, as well as technology.

According to PAS 555 an effective strategy encompasses:

- People

- Behaviour

- Physical security

- Equipment security

- Governance

- Leadership

- Culture

- Technology

Gust MEES's insight:

Along with CESG’s 10 Steps to Cyber Security and CSI’s 20 Critical Controls for Cyber Security, PAS 555 forms the basis of the new Managing Cyber Security Risk course – which helps senior managers to create a cyber security risk management strategy, based on current best practice frameworks.

As well as helping you to create a strategy that’s right for your organisation – this course will also help you to tackle the difficult bit – delivering the strategy!

8 Characteristics of the Innovative Leader

8 Characteristics of the Innovative Leader | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Ultimately, an innovative leader should try to create new ideas, but it is more important that they create a culture of innovation.  We often talk about empowering people and then getting out of their way, but what is often missed in the process is removing some of those barriers that they will encounter along the way.

This why it is so important to spend time in the classrooms, see what teaching and learning looks like, and then help to create a better tomorrow for our students and educators.  Again though, at the heart of innovation is people, not stuff.  If we always keep that at the forefront of our work, we are more likely to create an innovative culture.

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING: The Speed of Cultural Change

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING: The Speed of Cultural Change | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Change can happen quickly. We see this around us all of the time. Music and media change the world everyday. They are able to shape public opinion through storytelling, common language, and passion for the topic. Schools often feel that change is a long process that can't be accelerated because of the massive amount of persuasion that has to take place among the adults in the system. This thinking is inhibiting innovation, and opportunities to be nimble enough to seize real-time opportunities.

===> Schools must move fast on the road to being different. <===

It can be done and is being done by courageous leaders throughout the country. It is a rarity that a school system can move this fast, but it's schools can and must if they are meeting their moral obligation to serve all students in a way that meets the needs of today's learner.

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
George Couros (@gcouros on Twitter) is the Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning for Parkland School Division, a large district near Edmonton, Alberta.

As many school administrators are enjoying their summer break, we all tend to think of ways that we can make our school better in the upcoming year. Often, I point school principals and district leaders to a powerful post by Will Richardson that helps us point the finger right at ourselves when we are looking to push our school ahead. Richardson states:

"Meaningful change ain't gonna happen for our kids if we're not willing to invest in it for ourselves first. At the heart, it's not about schools . . . it's about us."
