Interview: Chip Bell and Marshall Goldsmith on Art of Effective Mentoring | #Infographic | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Last week, Chip R. Bell and Marshall Goldsmith released the revised edition of their classic book “Managers as Mentors: Building Partnerships for Learning”.

This week, they open up in a free-flow conversation with QAspire on the art of effective mentoring. In my view, this interview is almost a definitive guide to become a great mentor!

Do Self-Directed Learners Use Mentors, Guides & Coaches? | #Autodidact #Coaching #Mentoring #LEARNing2LEARN  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
For those not familiar with self-directed learning, they sometimes have a stereotype about what it means to be a self-directed learner. One of them includes this vision of the solitary and independent learner who does things her way. She only depends upon herself, not relying upon teachers or others. Yet, in my study of self-directed learning, that tends to be far from true. In fact, many self-directed learners actively seek out different guides and mentors in their pursuit of new learning goals. They own the learning, but they seek out mentors and guides to accomplish their learning goals.

Self-directed learning is not solitary learning. It is not anti-teacher, anarchist, nor is it selfish. At least that is not the vision for most advocates and champions of self-directed learning. What makes it distinct is that the learner, not a teacher or other authority, takes increasing ownership for the what, why and how of learning. It stems from a conviction that teaching self-sufficiency and self-regulation is effectively done by providing contexts where one is able to practice self-regulating and being increasingly self-sufficient.

How to create a culture of daily mentorship | eLeadership | Coaching | Mentoring | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
According to a study by Harvard Business Review, young high achievers value mentoring and coaching and often leave their current gigs in a quest to have those needs met. Companies like Microsoft and KPMG have caught on by giving employees exposure to peers in different divisions to provide fresh ideas and new ways of thinking.

In addition to more formalized training and education programs, many companies also try to foster mentorship within their organizations, often with mixed results. Like matchmaking, mentorship can seem shrouded in mystique and luck. HR departments eagerly set up colleagues for lunches or other work “dates” and cross their fingers that the chemistry will spark. A seasoned pro will take an eager novice under his or her wing and the next generation of great leaders will be born.

On Educational Coaching, Mentoring & High-Impact Learning

On Educational Coaching, Mentoring & High-Impact Learning | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Coaching is a difference-maker in education.  Think of the mindset evident in high-performing athletic teams, chess teams, even actors and other entertainers. Content providers are valuable, but that is not what makes learning organizations distinct, especially not those that seek to reach and provide a high-quality education to a full spectrum of learners.

.

The same thing is true as we continue to implement things like competency-based education models. Many celebrate the way CBE can reduce the cost of college degrees, increasing access and opportunity, and addressing critical workforce needs. However, if cost reduction happens at the expense of great coaching and mentoring, I am concerned that we will make little progress in the democratization of education.

.

The “haves and have nots” of education depend largely upon the prerequisite skills needed to take advantage of newer and emerging learning environments ranging from CBE to MOOCs, self-directed learning to self-organized learning environments....

Mentoring Instead of Teaching: A Paradigm Shift

Mentoring Instead of Teaching: A Paradigm Shift | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
By: Dawn Casey-Rowe Teachers give homework. Mentors change lives. If schools replaced teachers with mentors, classrooms would be revolutionized forever. This isn’t semantics – it’s a paradigm shift...

As we redesign schools, we have a unique opportunity to find practices that work and use them. Mentoring is one of those practices. I don’t want to be a teacher anymore. Teachers give tests and assign homework.

I want to be a mentor. I want to support students as they create the masterpieces that will be their lives.

I can only do this if we make school less about the test and more about the mission–treating students like the unique individuals they are with gifts that will change the world.

The Rice Process's curator insight, May 26, 2014 6:26 PM

Excellent insights! The mentor/student relationship is a significant part of the learning process for all students at all stages of their education. A mentor is more than a teacher or advisor. A mentor accompanies the student on their personal journey, advising and giving feedback along the way. Many students--either consciously or unconsciously--crave additional guidance from educators, but may not know how to seek out that guidance.  Mentoring programs--in which students can talk to teachers or other educational mentors in a setting that is less formal than the classroom--provide a structured opportunity for students to do this. A well-planned and executed mentoring program could help define goals and means for students to stay on track, learn and grow.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, May 30, 2014 11:33 PM

I must agree completely with this article. There must be a clear shift within classrooms to allow students to access their learning in more efficient was. Sadly however most parents do not have an understanding of this idea and therefore may have opposition to their children learning from their own experiences with the teacher supporting them along the way.

In my humble opinion:  It is never too late to be a mentor, and you are never too experienced to have a mentor.

How wonderful it is to share tools, tips, mistakes, and lessons with someone who has not had the same experiences.

On the flip side, seeking out someone as a mentor who already has the expertise and experiences in an area that you want to strengthen is a great suggestion.  (Why would I want to learn the hard way, when I can learn from someone who has already made the mistakes, and has proven methods, tools, and tips to help accomplish my goals faster.
