Roger Smith's curator insight, April 9, 2015 12:53 AM

After testing the security of six Internet of Things (IoT) devices commonly used in homes, Veracode security researchers found that product manufacturers don't put enough focus on security and privacy as a design priority; this puts users "at risk for an attack or physical intrusion." They found vulnerabilities in the devices that could potentially act as a "pathway for robbery, theft of sensitive data or even stalking."

What is a smart city?

A smart city is as an urban area where sensors have been implemented across public infrastructure in order to monitor traffic and usage of public services, such as lighting and parking spaces.

The contextual analysis of the real-time information gained from the sensors can help governments and companies in many sectors to make cities more sustainable and efficient, as well as being better able to cater to the needs of citizens living in the smart city.

The Internet of Everything (IoE) represents the next “world-changing” revolution, after the Industrial Revolution of 1750 – 1900, and following the Computer & Internet revolution which started in the 1950’s. It is an exciting scenario in which objects, personal devices, even animals communicate, take Intelligent decisions, and autonomous actions on their own without human interaction. This revolution will completely transform industrial sectors and the entire world, for all of us, in ways as powerful as the Industrial Revolution and even more. It is our future, and it is happening now.

How is it happening? For an Evolution of Technologies, and with a Revolution of Minds…

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is aware we live in a connected world. Americans wear Fitbits, have Nest thermostats, use automated light systems from companies like Belkin and Philips, even have televisions that predict what they want to watch. But in a new report, the FTC has a warning: Existing privacy regulations don’t really cover the Internet of Things, and the Commission doesn’t really trust device manufacturers to do the right thing—or even be aware of the risks of collecting all that data.

In a staff report issued this week, the FTC warned that makers of connected health, home, and transportation devices could potentially leave their users vulnerable to data hacks. Most of all, the FTC is concerned that private information will be used to jack up users' insurance rates or deny them access to loans.

The Internet of Things: Your worst nightmare | ICT | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Is life really going to be easier when you can’t use your toothbrush because it’s lost its Internet connection?

My problems started with an all-too-common occurrence: My Wi-Fi router burned out and I had to replace it. This happens regularly enough that I keep another router as backup. I turned it on, then connected it to my cable modem and Sonos bridge for wireless music streaming. I was feeling smug — I used the same SSID and password as the previous one, figuring that all the devices would automatically connect to it.

Ah, if life in the IoT age were only so simple.

A $60 Gadget That Makes Car Hacking Far Easier | ETHICS | CyberSecurity

A $60 Gadget That Makes Car Hacking Far Easier | ETHICS | CyberSecurity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
THE AVERAGE AUTOMOBILE today isn’t necessarily secured against hackers, so much as obscured from them: Digitally controlling a car’s electronics remains an arcane, specialized skill among security researchers. But that’s changing fast. And soon, it could take as little as $60 and a laptop to begin messing around with a car’s digital innards.

Tomorrow at the Black Hat Asia security conference in Singapore, 24-year-old Eric Evenchick plans to present a new device he calls the CANtact. The open source board, which he hopes to sell for between $60 and $100, connects on one end to a computer’s USB port, and on the other to a car or truck’s OBD2 port, a network port under its dashboard. That makes the CANtact a cheap interface between any PC and a vehicle’s controller area network or CAN bus, the collection of connected computers inside of every modern automobile that control everything from its windows to its brakes.

Kaspersky: Internet of Things means Internet of Threats | CyberSecurity | DigitalCitizenShip | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The way Eugene Kaspersky sees it, there may soon come a day when you wake up and your coffeemaker refuses to brew anything – or worse, will only brew decaf – until you pay up on the ransomware that has infected it.

Kaspersky, CEO of Kaspersky Lab, told some of the company’s top partners at its annual North American Partner Conference here this weekend that he believes IoT stands not only for “Internet of Things,” but also for “Internet of Threats.” The emergence of IP and intelligence in an increasing number of previously disconnected devices will lead to new and novel attack vectors, the executive predicted.

It’s not just the pleasures of this world, the benefits and the beauty, that we have to think about,” Kaspersky told partners. “We also have to think about the other side, the bad guys, as well.”

And while the coffee maker was a bit of a perhaps a tongue-in-cheek example, Kaspersky said he does see a variety of attack opportunities on devices that have heretofore not been connected to the network. The first one to be hit, he posited, will be right in our living rooms.

Adding Security to the Internet of Everything | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Don’t panic just yet: but in a few years, your fridge could become a target for cybercriminals. As the number of devices in the Internet of Everything grows, so does the likelihood that connecting these devices and networking them together could increase the number and type of attack vectors we will see in the future. And that means we need to think differently about IT security and the levels of protection needed for this new, connected world. Protecting all of IoE interactions is crucial in enabling people and organizations to benefit from these advances.

The IoE builds on the foundation of the Internet of Things, or IoT. By comparison, the IoT refers to the networked connection of physical objects (doesn’t include the “people” and “process” components of IoE). IoT is a single technology transition, while IoE is a superset that includes IoT.

Spencer Tan's curator insight, February 20, 2015 11:49 AM

Thus with the above news from Cisco one can be sure that with the increase of devices, internet security will be the next big thing and top investment from Small Business to Large Scale Enterprises? One could deny the need of investing in as simple as SSL certificates to DOS prevention  or even large scale hardware and Software firewall.

I deem ICT companies will make a big ding investing in specialization of deploying and implementing in Internet Security.

Also Read up on how to verify that the Website you visit or intend to make purchases is secure.
