Citizenship, Respect and Safety are NOT Lessons to be Checked Off!

Citizenship, Respect and Safety are NOT Lessons to be Checked Off! | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

When we first began our blogging journey with eight year olds, two years ago, a HUGE amount of groundwork was laid prior to our very first post. Looking back, those first building blocks seems SO insurmountable … but … we’ve done it, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it! Learning WITH the world has proven to be a POWERFUL way to personalize and DEEPEN our curiosities.

Prior to beginning this “new” way of learning, we spent a great deal of time exploring other class blogs to see all the “possibilities” and to get a sense of our hopes for our new blog. You see, this was a pilot project – the very first classroom blog in our system. We knew that, if it was going to be a success, we needed to be VERY clear about what success would LOOK like!

As I write this post, I see this process much like the steps needed to build a strong, durable, long-lasting structure. There is the “planning stage” … drafting the vision out; it is an extensive AND intensive process that is necessary to ensure a successful project. Next, there’s the building stage … from the ground up.

Gust MEES's insight:

Check this ===> After a few tears, and an AMAZING conversation about WHY … we began to “problem solve” together. They fully understood the importance of safety and the responsibility we ALL shared for being safe and thoughtful bloggers … SUCH amazing eight year olds! In the end, I ended up paying for a yearly subscription to our amazing flag counter. It has been worth EVERY penny to continue our learning AND our safety! <===

21 Century Classroom: The Evolution of My Practice and Why I'm So Excited About Integrative Thinking

21 Century Classroom: The Evolution of My Practice and Why I'm So Excited About Integrative Thinking | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

In 2009 I recognized that the world of education was rapidly changing and that in order to remain relevant and useful to my students I would need to set aside my belief system about education and learn what it means to be a teacher in the 21st century.  I began this blog in 2010 to document this transformation.

My practice became very technology based as my students and I explored the possibilities of Web 2.0 Tools. From that I learned:

1. How to build a global learning community.
2. How to connect students directly to experts in any field
3. That students are independently building learning communities outside of school that are often more meaningful than those in their day schools.
4.  It is possible to involve students in projects that have relevance beyond the classroom and contribute to the construction of knowledge in the "real" world.
5. That contact with students is no longer within the 4 walls and designated hours of school. Boundaries have shifted.
6. That there are myriad ways for students to demonstrate learning.

Deanna Moore's curator insight, September 12, 2013 8:25 PM

I find that students should learn alot more about things that are relevant in the real world, In highnschool and middle school I learned alot of information that I will never again use in my life. For example; I have not used algebra since I learned it in middle school. My point is I havent used these things since I was young and it seems to be useless knowledge. I would have prefered to learn more about money and how to budget it.

Flipped learning advantages

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, January 20, 2014 12:25 PM

The Flipped Classroom approach is been widely implemented in schools and colleges around the world. It is even considered as one of the greatest achievements of 21st century education.

The concept behind it is to reverse the traditional classroom practices with the aid of technology. Students access the already prepared lecture materials at home, in advance of the class and in the class they engage in structured class activities to work through problems with their teachers’ help, further their knowledge and learn through collaboration with fellow students. For the Flipped model to be successful, teachers before its implementation need to assess whether it is appropriate for their curriculum and students. They need to see if their students will be receptive to the new learning environment and upon implementation and use, teachers should employ effective practices to keep the model functioning successfully.
