How flipped learning works in (and out of) the classroom

How flipped learning works in (and out of) the classroom | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Flipped learning is more than just having students do homework during the school day. It’s more than just putting the onus on students to teach themselves. In fact, it’s neither of those things. Don’t be fooled by simple explanations of flipped classrooms that simplify a highly complex undertaking.

Have You Flipped Yet?

Have You Flipped Yet? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

No, I’m not asking whether you have finally lost it, but whether you are participating in perhaps the most revolutionary innovation in education over the last 50 years. “Flipping the Classroom” is a concept which arose from the incredible success of the Khan Academy.

Essentially, the concept is based on the fact that teachers are no longer the fountain of knowledge (in fact recent surveys have shown that learners are much more likely to Google for information than to ask their teachers or their families).

So in “The Flipped Classroom” model, knowledge is delivered at home (via online eLearning, Khan Academy videos etc) and the classroom is used to provide additional support.

The Flipped Classroom

The Flipped Classroom | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

It is a model in which authentic, often hands-on, experiences and student interests drive the learning process, and the videos, as they are being proposed in the flipped classroom discourse, support the learning rather than being central or at the core of learning.

Carlos Lizarraga Celaya's curator insight, July 3, 2013 1:20 PM

I see the power of engaging kids in science and technology through the practices of making and hands-on experiences, through tinkering and taking things apart. Schools seem to have forgotten that students learn best when they are engaged; in fact, the biggest problem in schools is boredom. Students sit passively, expected to absorb all the content that is thrown at them without much context. The context that’s missing is the real world.

Learning by doing was the distillation of the learning philosophy of John Dewey. He wrote: “The school must represent present life—life as real and vital to the child as that which he carries on in the home, in the neighborhood, or on the playground.”

Flipped learning advantages

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, January 20, 2014 12:25 PM

The Flipped Classroom approach is been widely implemented in schools and colleges around the world. It is even considered as one of the greatest achievements of 21st century education.

The concept behind it is to reverse the traditional classroom practices with the aid of technology. Students access the already prepared lecture materials at home, in advance of the class and in the class they engage in structured class activities to work through problems with their teachers’ help, further their knowledge and learn through collaboration with fellow students. For the Flipped model to be successful, teachers before its implementation need to assess whether it is appropriate for their curriculum and students. They need to see if their students will be receptive to the new learning environment and upon implementation and use, teachers should employ effective practices to keep the model functioning successfully.

“Flipped classrooms”: You keep using that word...

“Flipped classrooms”: You keep using that word... | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Flipped learning demands a flexible environment. Tying back into the learning culture, if content is available, we have to be OK with students choosing when and where they learn. A flexible environment (both literally and philosophically) will allow students to do just that. Physical spaces in schools need to be adaptive, allowing for group work, independent study, performance, evaluation — the list goes on. Our expectation of student learning timelines also need to be flexible.

Is our hour of class time really ours to dictate with content always available? If a shifting learning culture is the mindset, the flexible environments are the manifestation of the changes.

Learning from the Flipped Classroom [Infographic] | | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The idea of the flipped classroom materialized in 2008 with two Colorado chemistry teachers, Aaron Sams and Jon Bergmann. In the subsequent four years, many teachers have adopted the practice, resulting in flipped classrooms that increase in number every year. But in education, four years is a mere blink of an eye in terms of measuring something’s worth. Is the flipped classroom working?

Can All Classroom Lessons be Flipped?

Can All Classroom Lessons be Flipped? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

In a Flipped Classroom, students view instructional videos at home. Classroom time is then used for cooperative learning or project-based learning where students move beyond the knowledge-level mastery to analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Rather than lecture during student contact time, teachers directly interact with individual students and student groups. As a proponent of cooperative- and project-based learning, I’m excited by the idea.

My concern is that proponents of Flipped Classrooms implement an “all or nothing” approach. A video from the Learning Place and one formal research piece, indicate that all lecture videos are viewed at home. A Flipped Classroom assumes that all students will view the videos at home. It also assumes that students have adequate listening skills.
