Traditions in Luxembourg: Bakers prepare for “Bretzelsonndeg”

Traditions in Luxembourg: Bakers prepare for “Bretzelsonndeg” | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
Just a few days ahead of the traditional pretzel Sunday, bakers from Luxembourg distributed almond pretzels to passersby and politicians in Luxembourg City on Tuesday.

In a bit of culinary match-making, traditionally, men will buy their sweetheart a pretzel as a sign of affection. At Easter they will receive a chocolate egg in return as a confirmation of love – provided that the lady in question actually like the pretzel-giver.

In leap-years, such as last year, the tradition is reversed and women buy the "Bretzel".

2 February: Lichtmessdag

2 February: Lichtmessdag | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
Gust MEES's insight:

February 2 is a Christian celebration known as Candlemas, celebrating three events: the presentation of the child Jesus; Jesus’ first entry into the temple; and the Virgin Mary’s purification. In the United States and Canada it is known as Groundhog Day.
.
The event dates back to pre-Christian times, as a Celtic festival honoring the goddess Brigid, celebrating the end of winter. Peasants walked in processions to their fields with torches in hand to summon the goddess to cleanse them.

Traditions | Luxembourg | Give a pretzel to your sweetheart

Traditions | Luxembourg | Give a pretzel to your sweetheart | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it

Tradition has it that men give their sweetheart a pretzel for Bretzelsonndeg, the Sunday four weeks after the start of Lent. Should the woman in question wish to return the sentiment, she will give a chocolate egg to the man on Easter Sunday.

However, as this year is a leap year, roles are reversed and it is the woman's turn to gift the sweet pastry.
