High Tech Art Toys and Experiences Emerge at NEW INC | By Antwaun Sargent /// #mediaart | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

One year ago, the New Museum launched NEW INC, the first museum-led incubator for art, tech, and design. Last night at Red Bull Studios in Chelsea, the inaugural class of creative collaborators and practitioners presented six tech influenced art and design projects. “There were so many interesting collaborative projects being hatched at NEW INC and these projects happened because we have designers, artists, and game developers all in one space,” NEW INC founding director Julia Kaganskiy tells The Creators Project.

.

“From the outset I intended NEW INC to be a collaborative lab-like environment,” says Kaganskiy, who also was the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Creators Project.

28.07>02.08-2015 - Projet Ereb/Assou par Audrey Martin // Café Europa / Mons2015 | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

The Web We Have to Save By Hossein Derakhshan

The Web We Have to Save - Matter - Medium
The rich, diverse, free web that I loved — and spent years in an Iranian jail for — is dying. Why is nobody stopping it?

Seven months ago, I sat down at the small table in the kitchen of my 1960s apartment, nestled on the top floor of a building in a vibrant central neighbourhood of Tehran, and I did something I had done thousands of times previously. I opened my laptop and posted to my new blog. This, though, was the first time in six years. And it nearly broke my heart.

A few weeks earlier, I’d been abruptly pardoned and freed from Evin prison in northern Tehran. I had been expecting to spend most of my life in those cells: In November 2008, I’d been sentenced to nearly 20 years in jail, mostly for things I’d written on my blog.

But the moment, when it came, was unexpected. I smoked a cigarette in the kitchen with one of my fellow inmates, and came back to the room I shared with a dozen other men. We were sharing a cup of tea when the voice of the floor announcer — another prisoner — filled all the rooms and corridors. In his flat voice, he announced in Persian: “Dear fellow inmates, the bird of luck has once again sat on one fellow inmate’s shoulders. Mr. Hossein Derakhshan, as of this moment, you are free. ...

In fact, her questions are drawn from psychological profiling questionnaires. She – and the software – are profiling you and she gives you advice based on your answers.

Blast Theory is renowned internationally as one of the most adventurous artists’ groups using interactive media, creating groundbreaking new forms of performance and interactive art that mixes audiences across the internet, live performance and digital broadcasting. Led by Matt Adams, Ju Row Farr and Nick Tandavanitj, the group’s work explores the social and political aspects of technology. Drawing on popular culture and games, the work often blurs the boundaries between the real and the fictional.

WORD WARS - News from the EMPIRE by Julien Deswaef - An automated script fetches the lastest news from The New York Time #starwars #mediaart #netart

WORD WARS is a series of videos generated by filtering the news from the New York Times based on war related keywords and representing them in a short video clip mimicking the famous STAR WARS opening crawl.

Everything is generated daily and automatically using free and open source software and published on the dedicated Youtube channel. The full process will be completed and a video will be published if at least one news from the NYT RSS feed mentions "war" or a related subjet.

The empire is at war since its creation and its media does not fail to remind us of that, every single day. The YES MEN may announce the opposite, there is no end to eternal war. It may be with Eurasia today or Ocearia tomorrow, tension is on the rise. And doesn’t that feel better with John Williams’ score.

The artists of Telidon, Canada's doomed pre-internet web.

In 1982, as new wave and queer punk were invading the Toronto music scene, a computer programmer and artist named Bill Perry brought a desk-sized computer to an artist-run video production centre called Trinity Square Video. While the music stuck around, the art created on that computer has been almost completely forgotten.

The computer, made by a company called Norpak, was used to create graphics for a Canadian image transmission protocol called Telidon. The protocol was like a government-funded and corporate-controlled precursor to the graphical web, at least conceptually—and nearly a full decade before Tim Berners-Lee described the world wide web.
