The UK government recently announced a package of measures to reform adult social care in England. By capping lifetime care costs and making the means-test somewhat less mean, it promises a re-balancing of financial liability between families and the state that was agreed but never implemented in 2014. In so doing, it will begin to address one of the sources of inequity in the present system, namely the very high costs faced by people unlucky enough to have substantial and prolonged care needs.

Our England men’s football team’s incredible run to the Euro 2020 final captured hearts and minds across the nation, creating a rare moment of national unity and celebration. Despite the result, their journey has given us all hope, inspiring many to pull on a shirt and sing their support or kick a football about with their friends for the first time in ages. But great achievements on the pitch can also lead to even better ones off it – and now is the moment to seize it. As the nation’s favourite game, football is uniquely placed to address some of the pressing challenges facing our country as we get back to our feet.
Obesity is certainly one of those challenges that has been made worse by the pandemic. According to the NHS Health Survey for England, almost nine million (27%) adult men are now classified as being obese, with 22 million (68%) overweight. These are frightening statistics and provide the clearest indication yet of the scale of the health crisis facing the country. Despite the lifting of lockdown restrictions, it is a challenge that we are unlikely to see reversed in the short term without a concerted effort by public health authorities.

You see them on food packets — red, amber and green colours that are supposed to depict whether the food you are putting in your basket is healthy — or not.
Introduced in 2013 by the Food Standards Agency, the traffic light colours are assigned for levels of fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt.
The NHS website says that if there are a lot of greens on the labels, then ‘you know straight away that it’s a healthier choice’.

You would have to be on an Olympic-like training regime not to put on a little bit of Christmas weight over the festive period.
The abundance of food and drink is one of the best things about Christmastime merriment and an added few pounds usually follow.
A short period of indulgence is nothing to worry about, but if it is sustained from before the big day and into January, you may want to shed the extra timber.
The Health Survey for England in 2019 estimated that 28.0 percent of adults are obese and a further 36.2 percent are overweight, this is before the extravagance of December.

"Inequality and mental health have been two of the biggest conversations over the past couple months. So it’s fitting that 2021’s World Mental Health Day theme is “mental health in an unequal world”.
Countless studies have found people from the LGBT+ community are more at risk of mental ill-health and suicide compared to the rest of the population.
Earlier this year, a landmark NHS report found lesbian, gay and bisexual adults in the UK face concerning health inequalities in the UK. The report, published in July by NHS Digital, analysed the data from 1,132 LGBT adults who participated in a Health Survey for England between 2011-2018."

A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has provided a new perspective to the causes of obesity, ruling out overeating as a primary cause. The authors have proposed an alternative approach towards more effective and long-term weight-loss treatments. They said that obesity is not a direct cause of overeating, instead, overeating can stem from obesity.
The study, titled, 'The carbohydrate-insulin model: A physiological perspective on the obesity pandemic', outlines explanations on what causes obesity and says that the energy balance model which states weight gain is caused by consuming more energy than we spend is problematic.

The Prime Minister's brush with death during the first coronavirus wave became a catalyst for a new government strategy to tackle obesity. Boris Johnson, who previously labelled such policies government 'nannying' and a 'sin tax', has lost at least a stone since his COVID-19 scare. Now he wants Britons to follow with incentives such as shopping vouchers and better GP help.
But when comparing YouGov data with official NHS statistics it becomes clear that many people who are overweight, obese or morbidly obese don't perceive themselves that way - and this is especially the case with older men.
Two in five people in England (41%) describe their body weight as 'normal'. But only a third of English adults (34%) fit this category according to the Health Survey for England 2019, which was published last December.
