Small stepper motors are used to control pointer gauges in motor vehicles. These motors are small and can be driven directly by the Arduino due to low operation current (15-25mA per coil). They have gearboxes to increase torque and reduce the mechanical step.

Motors are present in cars, printers, computers, washing machines, electric razors, and much more. However, there are a number of people (which until recently included myself) that would be uncertain of how to make a motor run if they were handed one. So, let's learn something today. Let's learn how to use a stepper motor!

This page shows two examples on how to drive a unipolar stepper motor. These motors can be found in old floppy drives and are easy to control. The prototyping board has been populated with a 10K potentiomenter that we connect to an analog input, and a ULN2003A driver. This chip has a bunch of transistors embedded in a single housing. It allows the connection of devices and components that need much higher current than the ones that the ATMEGA8 from our Arduino board can offer.
