Arguably the winner of the standards war around wide area networking protocols for the Internet of Things, LoRaWAN is a low-powered, low-bandwidth, and long-range protocol. Intended to connect battery-powered remote sensors back to the internet via a gateway, on a good day, with a reasonable antenna, you might well get 15km of range from an off-the-shelf LoRa radio. The downside is that the available bandwidth will be measured in bytes, not megabytes, or even kilobytes.

LoRaWAN can be a good choice when key factors become particularly important. These factors include wide areas of coverage on an operating site with different buildings, low cost of infrastructure and operation, use of an established standard, and a large number of users and providers. However, LoRaWAN is less suitable for transmitting large amounts of data due to the low bandwidth, the associated low data transmission rate, and the duty cycle regulations in the 868 MHz range. For this reason, additional sensors with embedded AI algorithms are required for sophisticated monitoring applications.

LoRa isn’t new to Arduino, of course. But now your devices can make use of over 22,000 public gateways around the world that are connected to the TTS service. In a very over-simplified way, these gateways translate radio packets into internet packets. A radio signal effectively becomes data sent over the internet, and vice versa. This vastly extends wireless internet coverage and connects remote IoT devices to your Arduino Cloud.

It’s not just about putting sensors, devices or projects in remote or rural locations, though. It’s about connecting to the internet where there is no Wi-Fi, and without the need for a costly cellular data connection. And it’s power consumption is very low. So a lot of these far distant devices can run on batteries or solar power.
