The geography of my stuff

The geography of my stuff | Sustainability resources for the Australian Curriculum | Scoop.it

This unit of work focuses upon the interconnections and inter-relationships that link teenage consumers living in the UK with societies and environments overseas (where the goods they purchase are made). As well as explaining how these connections work - and why they have come into being - the unit introduces students for the first time to some of the moral, ethical and environmental issues that are associated with the global trade in consumer goods (including child labour and food miles).

Maree Whiteley's insight:

Plenty of hands-on examples and case studies are provided that will help teachers deliver these themes in an accessible and interactive way. Students will gain a first impression of some key ideas relating to retail land use from convenience stores to retail parks.

Future Shots- Sustainability Film Challenge

Future Shots- Sustainability Film Challenge | Sustainability resources for the Australian Curriculum | Scoop.it

This action-based film was created for Future Shots – the 2009 Sustainability Film Challenge for Young Victorians. The film explores what the term 'sustainability' means in a few different contexts, from economics to ecology and politics. This is a positive film that puts responsibility for sustainability in the hands of everyone – no matter how big or small their contribution.

Emily Middleton's comment, June 7, 2013 4:41 AM
This great film was created by students at Courtney Gardens Primary School. It clearly explains the concept of sustainability, while also reminding us that it is everyone's responsibility. Students would enjoy watching the film and may enjoy creating their own sustainability films to share with their school community.

A Model School Focuses on Students Taking Global Action

A Model School Focuses on Students Taking Global Action | Sustainability resources for the Australian Curriculum | Scoop.it
John Stanford International School has been a model for curriculum with global perspectives, and now they are expanding their goal to include teaching students how they can take action to help address global issues.
Maree Whiteley's insight:

... "Instead of just teaching our students about the world, we're asking them, 'What are you going to do about it?' It's about taking action." For a school that has already been a leader in developing a global curricula(2), the next challenge "is figuring out how to make global citizenship more alive, more visible," the principal says.

The Australian Curriculum v8.4 Sustainability

The Australian Curriculum v8.4 Sustainability | Sustainability resources for the Australian Curriculum | Scoop.it

Sustainability addresses the ongoing capacity of Earth to maintain all life.

Sustainable patterns of living meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Actions to improve sustainability are both individual and collective endeavours shared across local and global communities. They necessitate a renewed and balanced approach to the way humans interact with each other and the environment.

Education for sustainability develops the knowledge, skills, values and world views necessary for people to act in ways that contribute to more sustainable patterns of living. It enables individuals and communities to reflect on ways of interpreting and engaging with the world.  Sustainability education is futures-oriented, focusing on protecting environments and creating a more ecologically and socially just world through informed action. Actions that support more sustainable patterns of living require consideration of environmental, social, cultural and economic systems and their interdependence

Maree Whiteley's insight:

The Humanities Learning Area has several direct links to the organising ideas listed within the Sustainability Cross-Curriculum Priority v8.1.
