Within the next few years, the number of planets discovered in orbits around distant stars will likely reach several thousand or more. But even as our list of these newly discovered "exoplanets" grows ever-longer, the search for life beyond our solar system will likely focus much more narrowly on the relatively few of these new worlds which exhibit the most Earth-like of conditions.

The Astronomical Observatory of the Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley (OAVdA) and the INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Torino (INAF-OATo) in 2008 decided to implement and operate the APACHE Project (A Pathway toward the Characterization of Habitable Earths), the first-ever European network of small telescopes devoted to the search for exoplanets in transit around 3,000 bright low-mass stars (M dwarfs) in the solar neighbourhood.
