The Middle East and North Africa are well known for their severe water scarcity. The region’s lack of water resources is the result of many factors, including the harsh climate, intense heat, high evaporation rates, and increasing population growth. Libya is no exception in this regard. According to the World Resources Institute, it ranks 6th among the top countries worldwide facing “extremely high baseline” water stress.

Over the past three weeks many European Union officials have queued up in the capital of Libya, Tripoli, to offer their support to the country's newly-elected interim authority.

Like most of its North African peers, Libya has been grappling with rising wheat costs  following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war. Combined with the April blockade of a number of oil plants, the country is particularly vulnerable and unable to benefit from the global rise in oil prices.

Despite the political instability experienced over the past few decades, Libya’s economy has seen periods of significant growth, and the 2021/2022 period is expected to be no different. During 2021 the country saw the formation of a unity government, putting an end to years of conflict and triggering a strong economic rebound. In addition to the resumption of activities in the energy sector, Libya is focusing on stimulating socio-economic development through the revitalization of its economic sub-sectors.
