Coursera offers free, online courses to people around the world, but if you live in Minnesota, company officials are urging you to log off or head for the border.

The state’s Office of Higher Education has informed the popular provider of massive open online courses, or MOOC’s, that Coursera is unwelcome in the state because it never got permission to operate there. Don’t believe the hype?

There has been an extraordinary level of hype in higher education (and beyond) about Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs. Vice-Chancellors and their senior management teams up and down the country have been fretting about the developments and whether they need to get on board with one of the big players to avoid missing out. Two UK universities have recently announced their membership of a MOOC consortium with both Edinburgh University and the University of London signing up with Coursera. Meanwhile in the US the governance chaos at the University of Virginia where the President was forced to resign by governors and then reinstated two weeks later was prompted, at least in part, by differences of opinion on institutional strategy in relation to MOOCs.

What's the Big Idea?

Is college an expensive waste of time?

Peter Thiel and Vivek Wadhwa have debated this question repeatedly -- on 60 Minutes, at an Intelligence Squared debate in Chicago, and most recently at The Nantucket Project, a festival of ideas that was held on Nantucket, Massachusetts earlier this month.

Thiel is a venture capitalist with a vision for jump-starting innovation. To that end, he has invested in transformational technologies and companies. He also encourages young people to start their own businesses instead of pursuing "the anonymous safety of working for others," according to a manifesto on Thiel's Founder's Fund website.

It's the rare scientist who experiments on himself in front of his own family and 54,000 strangers. No wonder Joe Warren is nervous.

"I feel like an astronaut on top of a rocket that's about to blast off," the Rice computer scientist said about the massive open online course (MOOC) that he and three co-instructors are preparing to teach Oct. 15 on the education website Coursera. The class, An Introduction to Interactive Programming in Python, is Rice's first on Coursera. Enrollment topped 54,000 Oct. 5, with hundreds of students signing up each day.
