Bacterial communities in the gut an indicator for Parkinson’s disease? | #Research #Luxembourg #UNILuxembourg | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
Parkinson’s disease is an insidious disease: by the time it manifests as the typical motor dysfunctions such as tremors or muscle rigidity, portions of the brain have already been irreversibly destroyed. By this stage, the disease will have often begun already decades earlier.

In search of an early portent of the disease, researchers led by Prof. Paul Wilmes, head of the Eco-Systems Biology Group at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg, may now have found one in the gut: they have shown that the bacterial community in the gut of Parkinson’s patients differs from that of healthy people even at a very early stage of the disease. The researchers present their results in the scientific journal “Movement Disorders”.

With ELIXIR, the European Life Sciences Infrastructure for Biological Information, fifteen European countries have established a secure hub-and-node infrastructure in which biological data will be permanently accessible for research.

On Thursday, 7 September 2017, the Luxembourg ELIXIR node (ELIXIR-LU), an important interface in the field of translational medicine, will start its activity.

Funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, ELIXIR-LU will henceforth allow researchers across Europe to have access to personalised biomedical data stored centrally at the Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg.

“Providing these data for other researchers and analysing them in different contexts could lead to new diagnostic methods, better therapies, or hitherto unknown approaches in the prevention of certain diseases,” stresses Dr Reinhard Schneider, head of ELIXIR-LU.

Luxembourg's new iPad tool helps multilingual children learn maths | #Digital4EDUcation #DigitalLuxembourg

Luxembourg's new iPad tool helps multilingual children learn maths | #Digital4EDUcation #DigitalLuxembourg | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it

A language-free method of teaching maths to multilingual children to put early learners on an equal footing regardless of their home language has been tested in Luxembourg schools.

The programme for iPad, created by two Luxembourg University PhD students, visually interacts with young children, eliminating the added difficulties learning maths through a non-native language may pose.

A study carried out in 2011 showed young children learning basic maths in a non-native language performed worse than those who were taught in their mothertongue.

The iPad tool, which is now in its final stages, was tested in five 'cycle one' classrooms (five to six-year-olds) at two schools, in Grevenmacher and Steinsel.

PhD student and trained psychologist and researcher in developmental psychology, Véronique Cornu, came up with the idea of developing the tool which overcomes language barriers in early maths.

It teaches children through videos, without words or spoken language, using images to explain tasks and give instructions and providing visual-only feedback.

"Instruction in early education such as kindergarten is very verbal," Cornu explained. "Children who attend a kindergarten in a language which is not their first language sometimes miss the instruction and this makes learning basic maths more difficult for them.

"By creating a non-verbal tool, all children can profit from the same instruction from the start."

Honda invests in car key security research with SnT | #University #Luxembourg #Europe #IoT

Honda invests in car key security research with SnT | #University #Luxembourg #Europe #IoT | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
New key systems allows car owners to enter and start their vehicle without ever touching a key. But the technology is not entirely safe. That is why two ICT experts from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg partnered up with Honda R&D Europe to address security vulnerabilities.

Prof. Thomas Engel and Dr Florian Adamsky signed a 30.000 euro grant agreement with the automotive giant in the Spring of 2017 to collaborate on secure key systems.

Security risks of remote unlocking

Much like contactless payments, the new key technology lets individuals unlock their cars just by getting close to it. Conversely, walking away from a vehicle locks it. The only security measure is thus the limited range of key systems that is about 10 meters.

Car thieves can buy off-the-shelf products from the black market to amplify the key signal. This enables them to unlock and start the car and drive away while its owner is just a few meters away. It is such a clean theft that no traces are effectively left behind, making a claim with insurance difficult to nearly impossible.

Unknown to most car owners, passive key entry systems carry this new kind of vulnerability that causes major headaches to insurance companies and authorities. The so-called relay attacks have been around since 2011, but the problem has been growing exponentially and gaining increased attention. Several automobile clubs have begun alerting the population (in German), such as the German automobile club (ADAC).

Prof. Björn Ottersten receives an ERC Advanced Grant | #Luxembourg #UniversityLuxembourg #Europe | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
Professor Björn Ottersten, Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg, has been awarded an Advanced Grant (AdG), the most prestigious award offered by the European Research Council (ERC).

Björn Ottersten will receive 2.5 million Euros in funding over the next five years. He will use the grant to develop a novel overarching technical framework that could be used to simplify the design and operation of complex systems in different areas such as automotive radar, caching, and wireless networks. This is the second ERC Advanced Grant to be awarded to Luxembourg-based researchers, with both recipients at SnT.

Many automated systems, such as parking assist systems in cars, process data acquired from sensors and make decisions autonomously based on machine learning, a sub-field of artificial intelligence. However, such systems can be enhanced using mathematical models.

For example, in parking assist systems, a mathematical model provides methods for focussing the scan area around the vehicle to obtain reliable data about the scene.  The intelligent algorithms will then better recognise from the sensor data that there is, for example, a bin and a person nearby. The model will automatically focus attention on the person as the critical element.

People can intuitively recognise small numbers up to four, however when calculating they are dependent on the assistance of language.

The bilingual brain calculates differently depending on the language used

During the tests, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to measure the brain activity of the subjects. This demonstrated that, depending on the language used, different brain regions were activated.

With addition tasks in German, a small speech region in the left temporal lobe was activated. When solving complex calculatory tasks in French, additional parts of the subjects’ brains responsible for processing visual information, were involved. During the complex calculations in French, the subjects additionally fell back on figurative thinking. The experiments do not provide any evidence that the subjects translated the tasks they were confronted with from French into German, in order to solve the problem.

Professional bachelors in accounting and taxation to launch in September | #Luxembourg #University

Professional bachelors in accounting and taxation to launch in September | #Luxembourg #University | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it

Two professional bachelor degrees are to launch at the University of Luxembourg in September, marking a milestone in the history of further education in the Grand Duchy.

Born as a partnership between three educational institutions, the study programmes target holders of a technical diploma known as brevet de technicien supérieur (BTS) and will help students specialise in accounting and taxation.

The launch of these new programmes comes as a government response to address the lack of specialists in the two fields, given that access to professions in accounting and taxation is conditioned by strict academic requirements corresponding to a bachelor's degree.

Graduates of BTS courses are also credited for having requested a framework that allows the transfer of their existing technical skills to a more advanced programme.

According to a government statement, an increasing number of students in Luxembourg wish to continue their studies and obtain a bachelor's degree.

2017: Luxembourg university strikes global partnerships and new finance programme | #Europe | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
The University of Luxembourg's faculty of law, economics and finance ended the academic year by gaining a certification of standards for the third straight time, striking global partnerships and introducing a new programme on inclusive finance.

The faculty's dean, Professor Stefan Braum, who has been in the post for five years, presented a review of the past year. Professor Katalin Ligeti takes over the position from September.

European law and building contacts with the financial sector and its emerging fields has been a focus for the faculty.

In January it launched a new professional education programme -- the certificate in law and regulation of inclusive finance.

There has been further research within the FinTech sector to compete on the same level as other global financial places.

Luxembourg researchers decipher how the body controls stem cells | #University #Research #Europe

Luxembourg researchers decipher how the body controls stem cells | #University #Research #Europe | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
Stem cells are unspecialised cells that can develop into any type of cell in the human body. So far, however, scientists only partially understand how the body controls the fate of these all-rounders, and what factors decide whether a stem cell will differentiate, for example, into a blood, liver or nerve cell.

Researchers from the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg and an international team have now identified an ingenious mechanism by which the body orchestrates the regeneration of red and white blood cells from progenitor cells. “This finding can help us to improve stem cell therapy in future,” says Dr. Alexander Skupin, head of the Integrative Cell Signalling group of LCSB. The LCSB team has published its results in the scientific journal PLOS Biology.

Although all cells in an organism carry the same genetic blueprints – the same DNA – some of them act as blood or bone cells, for example, while others function as nerve or skin cells. Researchers already understand quite well how individual cells work. But how an organism is able to create such a diversity of cells from the same genetic template and how it manages to relocate them to wherever they are needed in the body is still largely unknown.

In order to learn more about this process, Alexander Skupin and his team treated blood stem cells from mice with growth hormones and then watched closely how these progenitor cells behaved during their differentiation into white or red blood cells.

The researchers observed that the cells’ transformation does not occur in linear, targeted fashion, but rather more opportunistically. Each progenitor cell adapts to the needs of its environment and integrates itself into the body where new cells are needed. “So, it is not as though the cell takes a ticket at the beginning of its differentiation and then travels straight to its destination. Rather, it gets off frequently to look around and see which line is best to take,” Alexander Skupin explains.
