LIST AND CERATIZIT PLAN TO IMPROVE HIGH SPEED MACHINING TECHNOLOGY

On Tuesday, 5 December 2017, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and the Luxembourg-based company CERATIZIT signed a three-year collaboration agreement. Within the framework of the NANOPIMS research project, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), the two partners have committed to a mutual aim: developing new physical vapour deposition (PVD) coatings that perform at high temperatures, exceeding 850 degrees Celsius, for high speed machining technology. They plan to achieve this goal by October 2020, the project's end date.

ADAPTING PRODUCTS TO THE DEMANDS OF THE CUTTING TOOLS MARKET

The machining trades are not only seeking to optimise costs, but also to reduce environmental risks to the maximum by using as little lubricant as possible.

Thus, two major trends are emerging on the cutting tools market: 'green machining' associated with the concept of reducing the amount of lubricant used (Minimum Quantity Lubrication – MQL), or near-dry machining, and an increased demand for PVD coatings that can withstand high temperatures. Consequently, during cutting activities the tools are faced with an increased surface temperature and a reduced life span.

Data Privacy: securing the key to digitalization | #Luxembourg #GDPR #EU #DigitalLuxembourg

Data is the gold dust of the 21st century, and with the amount of that data set to double every two years (reaching 44 trillion gigabytes by 2020), it’s allowing organizations of all sizes to open up opportunities to truly understand their customers. For instance, analyzing data in near real-time and acting on insights to deliver superior experiences.

However, the data bonanza is not a free-for-all. The very acts which excite businesses – holding and using data – have the potential to expose them to significant legal and reputation damage. Just as there has been a groundswell of interest in harnessing the power of data, so consumers are becoming more aware of their right to privacy and what giving away their data can mean. Organizations that fail to properly secure customer information not only face regulatory and legal sanctions, but can expect significant damage to reputation and trust. Marissa Mayer lost her annual bonus over the mishandling of security breaches that exposed the personal information of more than 1 billion users.

Governments are reacting to the increased demand for data legislation as well. Regulations such as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes into force on 28 May 2018 guarantees the data privacy rights of any EU citizen, no matter where their data is being held or processed. It will have consequences for businesses globally, not just in the European Union.

LIST announces new Financial Innovation Centre | Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology

LIST announces new Financial Innovation Centre | Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
The Finance Sector is the biggest source of GDP for Luxembourg. In terms of value creation and international competitiveness, there are important and largely untapped areas where financial innovation will help consolidate and grow the industry in the country, while also helping to transform the corresponding segment of ICT providers to the Finance Sector.

To this day, the industry has demonstrated that purely technological discoveries have not been enough to transform its services, reduce continuously rising costs or avoid the collapses experienced in the cyclical crises of the industry. Opportunities from digitization still remain mostly untapped.

In line with its mission to transfer innovation and accelerate economic impact for the industry, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology is therefore pleased to announce the creation of the Finance Innovation Technology and Systems Centre (FITS).

Luxembourg’s new FITS Centre comes to fill a significant gap in applied research and innovation for the Financial Services industry in Luxembourg and related ecosystems, including the ICT sector.

The measure of success for FITS will be its impact and its ability to bridge a gap between research and industry actors. Its working approach is based on two critical business principles:

Systemic interdisciplinarity: financial innovation challenges cannot be based on Fintech aspects alone but need to be addressed in an integrated and holistic manner as a combination of people, practices and processes.
Industry segment focus: Instead of targeting financial services as a whole, FITS will focus its applied research solely on subjects that generate tangible economic value for the local finance industry.

LIST AWARDED “REGTECH INNOVATION OF THE YEAR

PUBLISHED ON 04/12/2017

On 30 November 2017, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) participated in the ninth Luxembourg Finance Innovation Summit and was honoured to receive, together with eProseedRTC, the “RegTech Innovation of the Year” Award.

This follows LIST’s activities in collaboration with the National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD), Digital Luxembourg and eProceedRTC for designing and providing a tool enabling organisations to evaluate the extent of their compliance with the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) through a comprehensive database of 350 regulatory requirements.

The six awards presented during the Luxembourg Finance Innovation Summit 2017 rewarded the best ideas and innovative projects in the Luxembourg financial sector. Eight nominees were up for the "RegTech Innovation of the Year" award. The award recognizes companies helping their customers deal with complex financial regulatory environments by offering solutions meeting compliance and reporting requirements by focusing on innovative technology.

The GDPR Compliance Support Tool featured on the list of nominees announced by the organizers. The tool was designed and prototyped by a team of experts from LIST’s department specialized in IT and regulation technologies (ITIS) before being transferred, mid-year, for industrialization to the company eProseedRTC, software publisher FinTech / RegTech and IT service provider.

Laurent Pulinckx, COO of eProseedRTC, in the presence of Olivier Willemarck and Michael Renotte (eproseed) and Michel Picard (LIST), were awarded. The award recognizes the innovative aspect of the GDPR Compliance Support Tool as a tool simplifying regulatory compliance with GDPR, which will come into force in the spring of 2018.

This year edition aroused interest for more than 250 participants from the Greater Region – public institutions, architects, engineers, contractors, Building Information Modeling (BIM) specialists - all players from the building sector were represented.

LIST’s stand encountered a great success and the IT for Innovative Services (ITIS) team onsite - Sylvain Kubicki, Annie Guerriero, Lou Schwartz, Elie Daher and Fabrice Absil – was very appealed to introduce and explain their research works carried out as part of the 4D Collab project about collaboration around 4D modelling and the collaborative table of Immersion. The project focuses on the usage and interaction of synchronous 4D simulation for collaborative decision support in Architecture, Engineering and Construction. Other ongoing projects at LIST were also presented to the audience:

BIM4VET aiming at developing a European skills matrix for BIM actors and a method for assessing the maturity of skills using a tangible interface. This will enable the recommendation of trainings according to the selection of skills to be acquired and the actual BIM maturity of the professionals.

BIMEET aiming at enhancing the skills, qualifications and capabilities of construction practitioners (from middle and senior level professionals to blue collar workers), thus increasing market penetration and the adoption of key technological development in BIM, given the timeliness of the need for training in combined green and functional performance engineering.
and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) topic, where BIM and CIM (City Information Model) support the Life Cycle Analysis in the view of developing  research in sustainable technologies and methodologies for Smart City, a promising trend for our IT and Environmental experts.

The conference honoured the BIM “Made in Luxembourg” and analysed it from different angles from sustainable development to politics, with a special focus on its recent development. The conference welcomed Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who presented the government vision of the “Digital Luxembourg” and one of the talks was given by Sylvain Kubicki, a LIST BIM researcher.

BIMLUX2017 was a success and raised lots of interest among participants who came visit our stand.

DATA PROTECTION: A COMPLIANCE-TESTING TOOL

PUBLISHED ON 18/10/2017

At the first RegTech Summit held on 12 October 2017, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), Digital Luxembourg and eProseedRTC supported the National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD) in launching a tool to enable organisations to evaluate the extent of their compliance with the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).

PREPARING FOR 25 MAY 2018

Companies, public administrations and associations who handle personal data are required to comply with the new European regulations by 25 May 2018.

As a regulatory body, CNPD, together with LIST, have formed a partnership for the purposes of a research project, which is also supported by Digital Luxembourg,  in an effort to assist private and public stakeholders in integrating the provisions of the new regulations.

This tool – the "GDPR Compliance Support Tool" - also contributes to Luxembourg's objective of digitising and simplifying procedures, particularly in terms of ensuring compliance with the current and future regulatory framework.

ASCERTAIN YOUR ORGANISATION'S LEVEL OF COMPLIANCE

The "GDPR Compliance Support Tool" is an innovative, intuitive solution enabling users to ascertain the level of maturity of their organisations. It contains a comprehensive, in-depth database covering 350 regulatory requirement criteria.

The tool will allow stakeholders not only to manage a data processing register in addition to the other documents required to demonstrate their compliance, but also to monitor the progress of their level of organisational maturity. The tool will be offered to companies free of charge and its content will be updated on an ongoing basis.
