The Luxembourg space startup OQ Technology has signed a €2 million contract with the European Space Agency and is continuing its space connectivity project for the internet of things.

OQ Technology takes another big step forward. After being selected and having tested its technology, nearly thirty times between the end of 2019 and March 2020, the Luxembourg startup announced that it had signed a €2 million contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the Macsat project.

The European Space Agency (ESA) recently chose the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) as a developer of novel nontoxic and antimicrobial surface treatments for the interior of spacecraft in order to ensure the safety of future human space missions. 

On 4 March 2019, LIST’s materials department officially launched its 18-month research project “ESA NBactspace”. As a pioneer within the scientific community, LIST will develop novel nontoxic coatings with antimicrobial broad spectrum activity for the interior of spacecraft. 

The surface treatments used on spacecraft interiors recently proved to have a long-term toxicity risk due to their composition based on heavy metal particles, such as silver and copper. In parallel, a growing number of pathogen strains have shown resistance to antibiotics. At a time of increasing human space missions, safety against such toxicity is considered a high priority.

Raumfahrttechnologie mit weniger Gewicht. Naoufal Bahlawane entwickelt am LIST eine so genannte „Super-Schwarz-Beschichtung für die Europäische Weltraumorganisation“

„BlackCoat“ heißt das von Naoufal Bahlawane am Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) für die ESA geleitete Projekt: Bei der „Super-Schwarz-Beschichtung“ handelt es sich um eine Alternative zu herkömmlichen Verfahren der Streulichtvermeidung bei optischen Geräten: „Um Streulicht und somit z.B. die Unschärfe von im All gemachten Aufnahmen zu unterdrücken, werden bislang Material-Innenwände angestrichen oder oberflächenbehandelt bzw. zusätzliche Spezialbleche integriert.“ Das fällt dann signifikant ins Gewicht – das nun folgerichtig künftig reduziert werden soll.

Vorteilhaftes Schwarz: Gewicht und Kosten sinken
Anwendung soll das „neue Schwarz“ im Weltraum vor allem in Teleskopen finden, wobei das von Naoufal Bahlawane geleitete Forscherteam künftigen Anwendern noch einen weiteren Mehrwert anbieten will: „Neben dem Gewicht werden auch die Kosten für die Beschichtung in Zusammenhang mit Streulichtunterdrückung sinken“, so der gebürtige Marokkaner, der 2011 nach Aufenthalten in Frankreich und Deutschland zum LIST kam, wo er seit 2015 als Forschungsleiter und Technologie-Berater tätig ist (siehe Info-Box).

Naoufal Bahlawane sieht in dem Projekt ein Paradebeispiel für internationalen Knowledge-Transfer: „Wir arbeiten bei BlackCoat mit spezialisierten Unternehmen wie MateriaNova aus Belgien und Thales Alinea Space aus Frankreich zusammen: Diese Kooperation mit führenden Wirtschaftsakteuern zeigt die Bedeutung des Projekts für die Praxis. Gewicht und Kosten sind auch im All relevante Faktoren, und wir sind uns sicher, bei den immer kleiner werdenden Teleskopen einen wichtigen Innovationsschritt leisten zu können.“

Der Satellit, den Omar Qaise bauen will, ist nicht groß, vielleicht gerade mal so lang wie ein halber Arm. Aber er kann vieles: Verbindungslöcher im Wifi-Netz stopfen, auf Öl-Plattformen und Schiffen für eine bessere Verbindung sorgen oder Tierbestände in Afrika überwachen.

Die Kunden sind interessiert und Qaise weiß, wie man sie anspricht. Schließlich stehen in seinem Lebenslauf die ersten Adressen der Raumfahrt: Das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, OHB System, die European Space Agency und zuletzt SES. Für sie hat Qaise Satellitenplatz im Mittleren und Nahen Osten verkauft.

Das ging gut, denn Qaise kennt sich dort bestens aus und spricht fließend Arabisch. Der Irak ist seine Heimat.

Afin de développer les compétences dans le secteur spatial, un accord spécifique a été conclu entre le ministère de l’Économie et l’Agence spatiale européenne (ESA) en vue de permettre aux jeunes diplômés luxembourgeois d’obtenir une première expérience professionnelle dans différents secteurs spécifiques relevant du domaine de l’aérospatial.

Pour l’année 2017, l’ESA propose 20 postes de stage à des étudiants luxembourgeois. À travers le programme «Luxembourgish Young Graduate Trainees» (LuxYGT), les étudiants bénéficieront d’une expérience de valeur qui les qualifie pour de nombreux postes dans l’industrie spatiale, des instituts de recherches renommés et, bien sûr, à l’ESA. Tout au long de leur formation, les stagiaires sont soutenus par un tuteur expérimenté, membre du personnel de l’Agence spatiale européenne.

Ein Tor zur Mondoberfläche – ein solches soll bald in Luxemburg seinen Platz finden. Dabei handelt es sich um eine sogenannte Dusty Thermal Vacuum Chamber – kurz DTVC (Staubige Thermal-Vakuum-Kammer). Die DTVC wird in den Räumlichkeiten des European Space Innovation Centre in Belval in Betrieb genommen. Dies könnte bereits 2025 so weit sein, wie das European Space Resources Innovation Centre (Esric) am Dienstag mitgeteilt hat. 

Das Kick-off-Meeting zur Entwicklung und Herstellung dieser neuartigen Kammer fand bereits am 13. Juni 2023 im niederländischen Estec (dem Europäischen Weltraumforschungs- und Technologiezentrum) statt. Dabei führte die Europäische Weltraumorganisation (ESA) das Meeting mit Spartan Space, Haux Life Support, Maana Electric und dem European Space Resources Innovation Centre (Esric) – Teil des Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) – durch.

C'est un signe fort envoyé à l'industrie spatiale européenne. L'accord signé mercredi entre l'Agence spatiale européenne et le Grand-Duché donne naissance au «Centre européen d'innovation pour les ressources spatiales» qui s'implantera au Luxembourg.
Etienne Schneider a quasiment décroché la Lune pour son presque «dernier-né» de l'aventure space mining: le centre de recherches spatiales. 

A peine vient-il d'annoncer sa venue au monde sous l'étoile 2020 à Cologne que voilà la future structure déjà portée par un parrain de poids, l'Agence spatiale européenne (ESA). Le centre de recherches ne sera donc pas simplement national mais d'emblée européen.

Yesterday, 25 June 2018, the European Space Education Resource Office (ESERO) in Luxembourg was officially inaugurated. The dedicated launch event took place in the Luxembourg Science Center in Differdange, the host organization for ESERO Luxembourg.

A collaborative project between ESA, the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, ESERO Luxembourg is a project that will make use of the space themes to support national school education in the field of science and technology.

The ESERO Luxembourg Office was formally inaugurated by: Étienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister,  Minister of the Economy; Claude Meisch, Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Minister for Higher Education and Research; Jan Wörner, ESA’s Director General; and Kai-Uwe Schrogl, ESA Chief Strategy Officer.  

The ESERO Luxembourg launch marks an unprecedented level of cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Education that jointly co-funded this project with ESA on the national level.

SES is leadîng a European consortium of industry partners to sign an agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to set up Pacis-1, a new satellite communication platform for governments that is aimed at making secure satellite communications accessible and available to governments and institutions.

Pacis-1 is part of the ESA’s Govsatcom Precursor programme and is the first step in demonstrating how the European space industry can support the EU’s Govsatcom initiative and leverage governmental and commercial satellite services to provide secure access to satellite communications for a wide range of governmental applications. The project will demonstrate in-field usage of the system for civil protection, border control, humanitarian missions, maritime surveillance, among other applications.

Under the agreement, SES will put in place the architecture and service concept of Pacis-1, leveraging the space assets and ground infrastructure of the stakeholders involved in the project.

Ever wanted to work in the field of aerospace but didn't know where to start? Now is your chance as the European Space Agency (ESA) is to offer 14 internships for Luxembourg students.

The paid placements are part of a Luxembourg youth graduate trainee programme (LuxYGT), offering young graduates their first experience in various sectors related to aerospace.

The LuxYGT programme was created as a result of an agreement between Luxembourg's Economy Ministry and the ESA in order to develop skills in the space sector locally.

“Renowned internationally for hosting SES, one of the world's largest satellite operators, the national aerospace sector is an example of Luxembourg's engagement in the diversification and innovation in advanced technologies. This additional training provided by ESA allows young graduates to acquire high-tech work experience will be an asset for their future careers,” Economy Miniser Etienne Schneider said of the initiative.

Candidates wishing to apply for the LuxYGT must have obtained their Masters or degree in the past two years. Successful applicants will occupy roles for a period of 12 months with the possibility to extend the placement by a further 12 months.

L’Agence spatiale européenne (ESA) s’est associée mardi au Luxembourg pour étudier l’exploration minière spatiale, mais aussi progresser dans la connaissance des astéroïdes.

Le directeur général de l’ESA Jan Wörner et le ministre luxembourgeois de l’Economie, Etienne Schneider, ont signé au Salon aéronautique international du Bourget, près de Paris, une déclaration commune.

L’accord prévoit d’étudier des aspects scientifiques et techniques de l’exploration et de l’utilisation des ressources spatiales. L’initiative devrait en outre contribuer à la classification des astéroïdes, à des expérimentations de même qu’à la conception d’un institut virtuel dédié à la science des astéroïdes, indique un communiqué commun du ministère luxembourgeois de l’Economie et de l’ESA.

La signature est prévue en octobre prochain, lors d’un déplacement à Dubaï.
