Seit einigen Monaten treibt die Luxemburger Regierung, allen voran das Wirtschaftsministerium seine Bemühungen voran, den Weltraum wirtschaftlich zu erschließen. Stichwort: Space Mining.

Dabei geht es darum auf Asteroiden nach Rohstoffen zu schürfen, die in der Regel im Weltraum verbraucht werden sollen oder auch zur weiteren Nutzung zur Erde geschaft werden. Kern der Politik soll ein neues Gesetz über die Nutzung von Ressourcen sein, die außerhalb der Erde geschürft worden sind. Aber auch Investitionen und Beteiligungen des Staates an Unternehmen und Forschung, gehören dazu. Zwei US-Unternehmen aus diesem Bereich - Planetary Resources und Deep Space Industries - haben sich bereits in Luxemburg niedergelassen.

Wie nun bekannt geworden ist, ist Luxemburg einer der Hauptaktionäre von Planetary Resources geworden. Die Luxemburger Regierung, die Staatliche Investitionsbank SNCI und Planetary Resources haben ein dementsprechendes Abkommen über 25 Millionen Euro unterzeichnet.

Das Weltraum-Projekt der Luxemburger Regierung nimmt immer mehr Form an. Am Montag will die Regierung zusammen mit dem US-amerikanischen Unternehmen Planetary Resources und der öffentlichen luxemburgischen Entwicklungsbank SNCI ein "Protokoll" über ihre Zusammenarbeit unterschreiben.

Planetary Ressources ist neben Deep Space Industries das bekannteste Unternehmen im Bereich "Space Mining". Zu den Gründungsmitgliedern gehört auch Google-Entwickler Larry Page. Mit Deep Space Industries hat Luxemburg bereits im Mai ein Abkommen über eine gemeinsame Prospektions-Mission zu einem Himmelskörper unterschrieben.

Un mois et demi après avoir signé un accord avec Deep Space Industries afin de lancer les opérations d’exploitation des ressources spatiales, le gouvernement s’est engagé lundi avec Planetary Resources, qui vient d’implanter son siège européen au Grand-Duché.

À peine officiellement inscrite au Registre du Commerce, Planetary Resources Luxembourg a reçu officiellement lundi le soutien du gouvernement luxembourgeois. Via la signature d’un mémorandum d’entente, la filiale luxembourgeoise de la société financée par Larry Page, cofondateur de Google, Éric Schmidt, executive chairman d’Alphabet et le réalisateur James Cameron bénéfice d’un apport de 25 millions d’euros au travers de la prise de participation de l’État au capital.

This summer, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to invest in asteroid mining, with a pledge of €200m ($223m) in funding for the space-mining industry.

Yet the country thinks it has more to offer the sector than just money: it also hopes to inject its intellectual capital into the mix.

Luxembourg is mobilizing homegrown talent at the University of Luxembourg to help private asteroid-mining company Deep Space Industries develop robotic technology for its prototype exploration spacecraft.

The University of Luxembourg's Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability, and Trust (SnT) will develop an optical vision system for the company's experimental Prospector-X spacecraft.

The research group at the University of Luxembourg's Automation and Robotics Research Group, which is part of the university's SnT Centre, has built up expertise in robotic automation and unmanned aerial vehicle vision systems.

Company establishing European headquarters in Luxembourg

Redmond, Washington, USA – June 13, 2016 – Planetary Resources, Inc., the asteroid mining company, announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the banking institution Société Nationale de Crédit et d’Investissement (SNCI).  This partnership with Luxembourg’s SpaceResources.lu initiative will advance technologies and lines of business toward the exploration and utilization of resources from asteroids. Just as Luxembourg accelerated the satellite communications industry through its investments, this funding for Planetary Resources Luxembourg will accelerate the space resources industry.

The Luxembourg Government announced on Wednesday that Simon "Pete" Worden, Chairman of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, has joined the government's Advisory Board of the recently announced spaceresources.lu initiative.

The news followed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the State, the Société Nationale de Crédit et d'Investissement (SNCI) and Deep Space Industries (DSI) to explore and utilise space resources from Near Earth Objects (NEOs), such as asteroids.

Prior to joining the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, Dr. Worden held the postion of Director of NASA's Ames Research Center until he retired in March 2015. He has held several roles in the United Stated Air Force and was research professor of Astronomy, Optical Sciences and Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona. A recognised expert on both civil and military space and science issues, Dr. Worden has been a leader in building partnerships between governments and the private sector.

Anyone who was doubting Luxembourg’s resolve to become the space mining capital of the world will need to rethink that opinion. It is the little engine that can. The country’s government announced today an extensive new partnership with asteroid mining company Deep Space Industries that will seek to advance the research and development of new technologies for use of mining operations in outer space.

In the short term, this means investing more money and resources toward Prospector-X, DSI’s initiative to develop an experimental spacecraft that can successfully test technological mechanisms that would go into mining asteroids.
