Pour répondre aux questions les plus fréquentes des start-up fintech basées ou non au Grand-Duché, la Luxembourg house of financial technology organisera de manière ponctuelle des sessions de questions/réponses sous forme de vidéoconférence avec des experts.

Face à l’afflux de questions qu’elle reçoit et qui sont souvent identiques, la Lhoft a décidé de prendre les devants en mettant en place une hotline ponctuelle destinée aux start-up fintech. Une première session sera organisée jeudi 23 novembre dans ses locaux entre 8h30 et 10h30.

Sur place, des experts d’horizons très variés seront présents, représentant des cabinets d’avocats, des firmes de consultance, des sociétés de capital-risque ou encore des institutions publiques.

Attend Startup Weekend Luxembourg on November 24th, 2017 in Luxembourg. Learn to build a startup by being an entrepreneur!

Preparations are underway for the House of Start-Ups, the future home of nyuko, the Luxembourg House of Financial Technology (LHoFT) and the Luxembourg City incubator. 

Set to open its doors in the first quarter of 2018, the House of Start-Ups welcomes entrepreneurs active in a variety of sectors, from tourism and urban development, to information and communications technology, as well as fintech.

Spanning some 5,000 square meters, over four floors, the incubator for start-ups will be based inside the Dôme building on rue du Laboratoire, in Luxembourg City.

Attracting startups to Luxembourg

Luxinnovation has recently seen its mission enlarged by the Ministry of the Economy in order to promote Luxembourg as a European hub for high-performance businesses and economic activities. The country is stepping up its efforts to attract foreign direct investment in a variety of fields (ICT, Automotive, Space, Manufacturing, and Cleantech to name but a few). This sector-driven approach will be complemented with actions aiming to attract new disruptive businesses in numerous areas (Fintech Regtech, Data-analytics…).

In this context, the “Fit 4 Start” programme could be considered as a “pilot initiative” to attract new ICT business. Launched by Luxinnovation in 2015, it successfully contributes to the visibility of Luxembourg on the international startup scene.

LUXEMBOURG - Le bâtiment Pixel au Kirchberg accueillera bientôt de nouvelles sociétés. Plus vraiment des start-up mais pas encore des entreprises mûres.

Grâce à son étage réservé dans le bâtiment Pixel au Kirchberg, Tomorrow Street pourra accueillir jusqu'à 16 entreprises. «Mais uniquement pour une durée limitée d'une à deux années. Ensuite, elles devront se trouver leur propre environnement de travail tout en restant en contact avec Vodafone Procurement ici au Luxembourg et son réseau», expliquait, mardi, l'un des directeurs de Tomorrow Street, Frédéric Richter.

Eines der luxemburgischen Unternehmen, die im März auf der CeBit in Hannover ausstellten, war Velocity. Eine Cloud-Plattform, die es ermöglicht, tiefe Lernalgorithmen zu verwalten, hat das Startup zudem einen einheitlichen Algorithmus entwickelt, der es Unternehmen erlaubt, mit wenigen Klicks ihre Daten zu analysieren und zu nutzen. Momentan ist Velocity in Europa und Südostasien aktiv, möchte aber bald auch auf dem US-Markt Fuß fassen, wie der Softwareentwickler Ivan Jacobs, der das Startup 2016 gründete, dem „Journal“ erklärt.

Eine Million Euro lässt sich das luxemburgische Wirtschaftsministerium die Ankurbelung des Tourismus im Luxemburger Osten kosten. Zunächst. Das ist die Anschubfinanzierung, um das Start-up "Regiotels" auf die Beine zu stellen.

Die dort versammelten Tourismusprofis sollen das machen, was sich viele kleinere und mittlere Betriebe gar nicht oder nur schlecht leisten können: Marketing für die Hotels, Verkauf der zur Verfügung stehenden Betten und eine maximale Auslastung mit neuen Kunden erreichen.

Preisdumping sorgt für Nachfrage

Im Moment laufen die Buchungen über Portale wie booking.com oder expedia.com mit dem Ergebnis, dass in saison-schwachen Zeiten Preisdumping den Ausschlag für die Buchung gibt.

"Mit diesen Zimmerpreisen kommen wir nicht mehr auf unsere Kosten", sagt Robert Hein, Direktor des Hotels Bel-Air in Echternach. Das soll sich zukünftig über eine vorher mit "Regiotel" ausgemachte Marge für Maximum-Preis und Minimum-Preis ändern.

The first StartUp Europe Awards, the Eurovision for startups, ceremony took place last night in Brussels at the European Parliament. Two Luxembourg-based startups, vyzVoice and APATEQ, have been awarded out of the 6 national nominees in total including OUNI, JOB TODAY, SWIRL, Digicash. Silicon Luxembourg also came runner-up in the Best Media Partner category.

A Luxembourg-based trust services provider is teaming up with the Blockchain identity startup Cambridge Blockchain to launch a dedicated platform for the European Union.

LuxTrust, which provides digital identity solutions to businesses and government, will develop an entirely separate platform using the Blockchain.

“Working with Cambridge Blockchain allows us to augment the scope of provided identities, including attributes for new sectors and businesses and will enable users to share personal data fully respecting the increasingly stringent European regulatory framework,” CEO Pascal Rogiest said in a press release issued Monday.

Cambridge’s input will see so-called “proof by design” concepts employed to provide various client-oriented services including consent management and compliance.

Coming from the EU heartland, supporters say the platform is even due to “transform” the identity industry.

La start-up basée à la Lhoft a remporté le 1er prix du hackathon international organisé par BNP Paribas pour une solution facilitant l’ouverture de comptes bancaires pour des clients professionnels, grâce à l’intelligence artificielle.

Tetrao se construit une réputation européenne. La jeune pousse a en effet réussi à convaincre le jury composé du top management de BNP Paribas avec sa solution d’intelligence artificielle capable de collecter et d’interpréter des documents disponibles en ligne pour accélérer l’ouverture de comptes bancaires pour des clients professionnels. Elle a remporté le 1er prix du BNP Paribas International Hackathon dans la catégorie «expérience client», a indiqué la banque dans un communiqué publié mardi.

La fintech luxembourgeoise était en concurrence avec 15 autres start-up finalistes venues de Berlin, Istanbul, Nankin, Paris, Rome, San Francisco, Singapour et Varsovie. Tetrao a précédemment remporté l’étape luxembourgeoise du hackathon, organisée entre le 9 et le 11 juin. Depuis, la start-up a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec des experts de BGL BNP Paribas pour co-concevoir, développer, implémenter et tester la solution proposée.

What is special about this edition?

Startup Weekend Luxembourg is currently reinventing itself in the way it operates. The long-time organizers have opened up to new people and decided to move away from just organizing two events per year. The new goal is to maintain momentum between events by organizing meetups to keep the community alive and inviting the winning teams to follow-up events at the national or international level. That’s why we also partner with other chapters like Startup Weekend Saarbrücken and Nancy to expand the network.

Right now, the meetups focus on preparing participants for the next event in November. During the ninth edition, we will also plan the tenth and potentially select a unique location.

An unprecedented partnership between the European American Enterprise Council (EAEC), a Luxembourg-based accelerator, and Luxinnovation will enable eight start-ups from Luxembourg to be present at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas in January.

The cherry on top of the cake? The eight stands will be in the Eureka Pavilion, the most prestigious of this worldwide event for electronics enthusiasts, which will take place from January 9 to 12 2018. 

This year, the CES welcomed 200,000 professionals. 600 start-ups were present on the famous Eureka space in the middle of the 4,000 exhibitors, and the event was followed by 60,000 media outlets. 

The eight start-ups will be selected before 15 November by a committee composed of members of the EAEC and Luxinnovation. 

The privileged sectors are space, automotive, media & content, fintech, cyber security, big data, internet of things (IoT), green technologies and food technologies.

Since the Chivas Venture first launched in 2014, almost 6000 social enterprises have applied for the chance to receive a share of the annual $1 million fund. (This year, 29 countries / 5 continents).

“We expect to see new projects, ideas and approaches especially knowing that the country (Luxembourg) has one of the highest rate in Europe of start-ups registered as having a social, societal or environmental activity.”

Ultimately, our goals remain the same: to help elevate the profile of social entrepreneurs from around the world, create tangible change by providing the most promising one’s  with funding and support to grow their business, and to act as a catalyst to grow this important movement.

Plus de demande que d'offre

Le centre d'accueil et d'innovation pour start-up fait l'objet d'un cofinancement de la part du ministère de l'Économie, qui prend en charge les travaux de rénovation à hauteur de 80%, soit 140.000 euros. Les entreprises hébergées en son sein seront encadrées par Luxinnovation. "Nous pensons pouvoir remplir les salles dans les deux ou trois mois qui viennent", explique Jean-Paul Schuler, le directeur de cette agence, qui s'est engagée dans un premier temps avec Technoport, à détecter les start-up prêtes à s'installer dans l'Innovation Hub. Pour Luxinnovation, qui traite chaque année près de 400 dossiers, "il y a aujourd'hui plus de demande que d'offre" sur le marché. D'où la nécessité de multiplier encore les incubateurs et accélérateurs au Grand-Duché, même si l'écosystème luxembourgeois s'est fortement développé ces dernières années, comme l'a rappelé la secrétaire d'Etat à l'Economie Francine Closener.

Si les écotechnologies sont privilégiées comme domaine de prédilection pour les start-up de l'Innovation Hub, des entreprises d'autres secteurs pourront s'y loger également. Pour le bourgmestre de la ville, l'Innovation Hub est d'abord un projet pilote qui s'inscrit dans le cadre du futur concept du site "Neischmelz". Avant les premiers travaux de chantiers prévus dans près de deux ans, la ville souhaite profiter de cette "étape transitoire" pour mettre en place des projets économiques à court terme, pour les inscrire ensuite dans une vision à plus long terme. Avec la création de nouveaux emplois à la clé.

New public-private innovation center opens its doors in Luxembourg

Recognizing a lack of support for late-stage startups that have completed Series A funding, Tomorrow Street leverages its network to help promising companies grow internationally.

“Our aim is to build innovation by connecting the dots and giving companies introductions and up-front exposure that they would normally not have,” explained Warrick Cramer, CEO, Tomorrow Street. “In today’s digital world the human connection has never been more important, and Tomorrow Street will provide those human connections.”

The excitement generated by the event — from the attendance list, which included Luxembourg’s Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, to the lively afterparty — was a reminder that innovation is king in this small country.

LUXEMBURG - Das Pixel-Gebäude, Sitz von Vodafone auf dem Kirchberg, wird Zuwachs bekommen: Firmen, die keine Start-Ups mehr sind, siedeln sich dort an.

Es war ganz schön viel los bei der Vorstellung des Innovationszentrum Tomorrow Street am Dienstag. Premierminister Xavier Bettel und der stellvertretende Premierminister Etienne Scheider waren zur Eröffnung mit von der Partie. Mit Tomorrow Street wollen Vodafone und der Luxemburgische Staat den Technoport-Unternehmen eine Chance geben, die nicht mehr jung genug sind um als Start-Ups zu gelten, aber auch noch nicht reif genug sind, um sich auf internationaler Ebene durchzusetzen. Dies alles passiert in einem High-Tech Umfeld.

Luxembourg startups active in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector can apply to be part of Fit 4 Start -- Luxinnovation's 16 week-long acceleration programme.

In its fifth edition, Fit 4 Start will begin in October and is set to give advice and funding to five early stage companies, helping them to develop product prototypes and teaching them how to test it with their first clients. 

Participants get free access to the co-working space of an incubator and also gain access to a network of contacts supporting startups in Luxembourg. 

Selected startups will receive €50,000 in funding that they need to match with €10,000 of equity.

Paying for fuel at a petrol station in Luxembourg could be possible from a mobile app before the end of this year.

New technology, created by a team of four people behind Luxembourg start-up  CarPay-Diem, means drivers will no longer have to carry a credit card or wait to complete a transaction at certain petrol stations.

The app, which is set to launch in September with a pilot programme, will automatically switch on a mobile phone as it enters a partnered petrol station through geolocation technology.

"When a user arrives at a station the phone automatically switches on," Chief Executive Officer of CarPay-Diem, Frédéric Stiernon, explained. "The app asks the driver to select the number of the pump and the app then signals when the pump is ready to be used.

"The driver fills up and immediately receives a receipt via the app. It will show the amount of fuel and the price."

The Orange Fab International Acceleration Network is now available for start-ups in Belgium and Luxembourg. Just as the start-ups selected in the 13 Orange Fabs in the world, young Belgian and Luxembourgish jewels will benefit from specific support enabling them to accelerate their development in their countries and internationally through the presence Orange Group.

Season 1 of Orange Fab Belgium and Luxembourg will start on 1 September 2017. Interested start-ups and developing products and services in sectors such as Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Internet objects, video content Mobile and connected objects can now apply on www.orangefab.be.

WIDE Startup-Programm vorgestellt:
Women in Digital Empowerment (WIDE) hat am Freitag sein Programm für Startup-Gründerinnen im Technologie-Bereich vorgestellt. Das so genannte „Startup Leadership“-Programm will in diesem Jahr zehn Frauen die Möglichkeit geben, sich im digitalen Bereich selbständig zu machen.

Es wird von der Europäischen Kommission unterstützt. Darüber hinaus sind auch das Wirtschaftsministerium und private Unternehmen Partner. Angesprochen sind Frauen, die Englisch oder Französisch sprechen, eine Idee für eine Gründung oder ein Produkt haben und sich bislang nicht recht trauten. Sie erhalten Zugang zum Netzwerk, Beratung und nehmen an gemeinschaftlichen Aktivitäten teil.

La start-up luxembourgeoise spécialisée dans de nouveaux modes de paiement a été récompensée mercredi dans la capitale américaine par le groupe bancaire BBVA.

SnapSwap ne cache pas se joie d’avoir été retenue parmi 200 start-up mondiales puis 10 finalistes de l’une des manches du concours «BBVA Open Talent Identity Competition» qui s’est déroulée mercredi soir à Washington DC.  

Le géant bancaire BBVA orienté sur les marchés hispanophones organise en effet son concours «Open Talent», qui est devenu parmi les plus importants au monde pour les jeunes pousses dans les fintech. Divisé en plusieurs catégories, il permet à l’institution financière créée en 1857 et orientée principalement sur les marchés hispaniques – et actionnaire de la banque turque Garanti – de repérer de nouveaux modèles et donc des partenaires potentiels.
