Elections across the globe this year will be a "prime target" for countries looking to spread disinformation and undermine democracy, such as Russia, EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell warned on Tuesday 23 January.

CDJM's insight:

The EU report examined more than 750 disinformation attacks between December 2022 and November last year,  involving the strategic spread of false stories and harassment of legitimate sources to reduce trust in public institutions and sow hatred against nations and groups of people. In the 750 attacks investigated, 4,000 channels (websites and social media platforms) had been used, with election attacks prepared months in advance.

Meta said on Friday october 13th 2023 it was taking steps including removing praise and substantive support for Hamas from its platforms after the European Union reprimanded social media companies for not doing enough to tackle disinformation.

The Strasbourg hemicycle confirms the text of the trialogues on December 15. Governments can still use spyware against journalists, but only "subject to authorization by a judicial authority" and only for "serious crimes." Stricter rules also apply to the removal of content on online platforms.

"Disinformation is being used as a weapon against all of us": EU Commission's Vera Jourova - DW News

[Video interview] In a DW interview the EU Commission's Vera Jourova discussed disinformation in the Russian war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza. The Vice President in charge of values and transparency sees Europe in the "epicenter" of an "information war." She is worried about the influence of Russian campaigns in Europe and warns that some political actors benefit of the nervous atmosphere they create.

CDJM's insight:

Apart from fake news which can sometimes give rise to interpretation, according to her, what worries the European commissioner the most are the hateful remarks, and the intensity of their violence, broadcast in the public space.
