Apple tops clean energy goal with new supplier commitments | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it

Apple today announced it has nearly doubled the number of suppliers that have committed to run their Apple production on 100 percent clean energy, bringing the total number to 44. Sony Corporation to source 100% renewable power

In the first in a series of corporate announcements ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit here, one of the world's largest electronics and entertainment companies Sony Corporation on Monday announced to join RE100. RE100 is a global corporate leadership initiative led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, bringing together more than 140 multinationals committed to 100 per cent renewable power. RE100 members are creating demand for 182.4 TWh of renewable energy per year -- more than enough to power a medium sized country, such as Thailand or Poland. By putting renewables at the heart of their business strategies, RE100 members are sending the demand signals needed for national governments to increase their own ambitions on clean energy.

EcoVadis's insight:

By focusing on the small steps each day, electronics buyers can fight the sustainability issues lurking within the electronics supply chain and make the world a better place.

Battery manufacture must take a global leap forward to ensure a sustainable and just transition

Battery manufacture must take a global leap forward to ensure a sustainable and just transition | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it

The global battery market is surging. By 2040 the global energy storage market is projected to attract $620 billion of investment. Over the past decade, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery market doubled on average every three years. To cope with this growth, we need the development of a sustainable and low-carbon value chain for batteries in order to contribute to the implementation of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, says Martin Brudermüller, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer, BASF and Benedikt Sobotka, CEO of Eurasian Resources Group.

Apple is now a $1 trillion tech behemoth, but is our planet paying the price?

Apple is now a $1 trillion tech behemoth, but is our planet paying the price? | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it

Apple has been making concerted efforts to improve its environmental footprint over the past decade. It is investing in its own renewables and claims its core business is 100 percent powered by clean energy. Attempts are also being made to clean up its supply chain, having recently a $300 million clean energy fund in China. Others tech firms are making positive moves. Both Dell and BT have "net positive" strategies through which they broadly aim to put more back into society — environmentally, socially and economically — than they take out.

EcoVadis's insight:

The information and communication technology (ICT) and electronics industries have collaborated to share concrete examples of how companies have built value in their day-to-day operations by implementing supply chain sustainability measures.
